I recently modded my Wii and added USB Loader GX. I added some games and it worked fine. After I added a GameCube game all of my games gave me a black screen when I load them.

Which cIOS version and what base are you using to play games?

I would recommend to use cIOS v10 (beta52 or beta 53) with the slot 249 on Base 56

please don't recommend bad cIOS revision.
some games don't work with r53, always use r52.
some games don't work with base56, always use base57.
some games don't work with either 56 and 57, and in that case we will help on case by case basis ;)

so, it would be nice to know more :
which version of the loader, which softmod, which game, which HDD (PLEASE, NO FLASHDRIVE ! THEY ARE NOT WORKING), etc.

Most of the created threads about USBLoaderGX not working is because of people using flashdrives. they don't work with any other loaders too, not just USBLoaderGX.
Maybe we need a big red letter notice in the usbloader section, but I'm sure people wouldn't read it.

Sorry If digging up an old thread is not cool, but I am having the same Issue getting the black screen.

First time I load a game it initializes mem card then goes black.
Each time I load that game after that, it just goes black.

I am loading from an SD card.
I have V10 beta 52 base 56 on slot 249 655535
I have V10 beta 52 base 57 on slot 250 655535

What should the loader and game be using both use slot 250? Not sure what else I can try.

First of all
Thank you for your efforts all the way here
Really appreciate such hard effort helping others.

I didn’t saw any one before mentioned about not using USB Flash drive!

What types of HDD you recommend ?

Is there any clear guidelines for compatibility of that cocktail (Games(video region & video type PAL or NTSE),cIOS,rev, base, slot) So we can follow
Or it is not possible to put some basic roles.

I faced the same issue of black screen and tiered of trying to fix
Thank you again.

most HDD are working.
WD are recommended
Seagate can have issues, but work mostly
Toshiba are reported having issues and not working at all (same as flashdrives!), don't buy that brand.

then, the settings are the common ones :
d2x v8 final or v10 r52, base57, if possible in slot249
all loader's settings to default, unless you have base57 in slot250 then you need to change it to that slot
set loader's IOS to 58 if HDD still not detected

First time I load a game it initializes mem card then goes black.
Each time I load that game after that, it just goes black.
hmmm, you talk about nintendont here?
because there's no memory card for wii games.
did you try using nintendont directly from hbc? are you sure it's USBLoaderGX issue? because this thread is about this loader.

Actually it is detected even in flash drive before ( it was TDK 8GB AND I Played Mario bro) then I tried to copy some physical disk put not working I got black screen
I will format it and start from beginning Any recommendations?
Have a nice time.
Edit: now I’m using flash drive 32GB San disk
Plan to replace with WD
HDD

[soulotion] I used (Wii backup manger) to format my (flash drive 32GB San disk) and (WD hdd) as wbfs.
and also using it to transfer my .wbfs & .iso games to eather of them now every thing is fine.

flashdrives (and toshiba hdd) might work in read mode if they are formatted in WBFS partition format. that's strange because it would mean the partition table and filesystem would be responsible for the issue, while wii games are not relying on filesystem at all while playing (whether WBFS or FAT32 or NTFS, they all work the same : based on a sector list)
write mode still doesn't work correctly and will freeze (when dumping a disc to the device, downloading covers, cheats, etc.)

the best and most versatile (working with everything) is WD formatted as FAT32.
it'll work with wii, gamecube, emuNAND, and all homebrew.

Hello, I've exhausted all possible options gathered from multiple threads to overcome the black screen issue. I'm thinking its possible I have corrupt game files - how can I test that theory? and is there anything else I can try from a softmod standpoint?

I’m having this same issue.

My GameCube games run normally from the Nintendont app through the homebrew browser but when I try to start games from the USB Loader GX that I have set up from the Wii home menu, the games don’t load and cause a black screen. Forcing me to restart my Wii each time

I FOUND A SOLUTION TO MY ISSUE.
Hopefully it'll help you out if you're reading this.

Ok so I found a fairly recent wii modding video that showed me how to install homebrew, cIOS, a wad manager, usbloaderGX, support for Gamecube, etc.
In short, I did all that stuff to the tee. I was getting the black screen/freezeup issues upon loading a wii backup game through the harddrive i had plugged in. Anyway I have a bit of a hoarding issue when it comes to computer bits and pieces and I have quite a few hard drives sitting in a box in my store room. So I tried loading on a regular sized hitachi, seagate, and wd drive, all resulted in the same issue. I've reloaded cIOS I dont know how many times, different revisions, different settings within the loaded, like forcing ntsc, pal, use global... basically a whole bunch of suggestions i've read from checking out the message boards and youtube, etc. Didnt have alot of luck but upon reading a BUNCH of Cyan's stuff, as well as all the crap i've tried, I figured ok revision 8 final of cIOS is probably the best one to go with.

So then i tried formatting these different drives as WBFS, dual partitions, etc. That didnt work for me either... until I tried a plain jane 16gig lexar flash drive, formatted it fat32 and 16k clusters. Loaded up some games, they all work. ok great.. but thats only 16 gig.

>>This whole time i've been using a hard drive dock that's externally powered.<< During my rummaging around in my pile of tech stuff in my store room I found a small laptop hard drive enclosure and I just so happened to have a hitachi hardrive that fit inside of it, this one wasnt powered externally, it was powered through the usb. So more built for space saving than the larger dock was.
Anyway, it worked!
I'm not sure what it was, whether it was just a fluke that the smaller hard drive in the usb powered enclosure worked, or whether it had something to do with the fact that the larger drive dock was externally powered (I dont see how this could be the case... but who knows...). Could have maybe been the usb cable length or possibly even a faulty usb cable, although it works fine everywhere else on the larger dock vs the short cable on the drive enclosure.

Anyway here are the settings and the hardware I wound up using in the end:

either a flash drive or usb power drive enclosure
cIOS r8 final with Cyan's suggested settings (r10 might have worked, but I wasnt going to mess with it when it started to work for me)
usbloaderGX with global settings active on all games and global settings at their default values
wii backup manager was used to format ALL the drives as FAT32 with 16k clusters. (not sure if 32 clusters would work with the usb or enclosed drive, i wasnt going to test it when stuff started working)

I think that was about it. I hope reading about my little adventure in getting my issue fixed helps someone else out there with the same issues.

Good luck!

Thanks for taking the time to lay out your adventure as it is very similar to mine - I can empathize. I've done all these steps so many times, I actually understand what you're saying.

I will experiment with different hard drives - I've tried external and USB powered drives, but they were both 4 and 2 terabytes respectively (WD brand) - so maybe if I decrease the size I'll have better luck.

Thanks again.

And to make sure I'm following @Cyan 's recommendation closely - the correct cIOS load is:

what : d2x v8 final
where : 249
base : 57
version : 21008
Press A to install

when complete, you can do it again (not necessary, but might be useful one day) with this changes :
where : 250
base : 56

Well after all that - I did happen to get the warning screen to strap the controller to your wrist, but then a black screen. #progress - do you think it has anything to do with the loader settings in USB Loader GX? After I installed v8 final as instructed above, I wasn't able to specify the loader settings to utilize base 57, that prompted me to uninstall all cIOS other than 57 and 58, but I was still unable to specify 57 and it's default went to "200"

I just had the issue where I would get a black screen when loading games, and I think I found the solution. I had GameCube games and other stuff on my flash drive (32gb sandisk cheapo from Costco) and the games would show up in USB loader gx but when loaded would go to a black screen. I had a second one so I blanked it and put only Wii roms on it. The next time I tried it loaded the game perfectly. I would have to Assume it was something to do with the other stuff on the drive, but it could’ve been just the drive itself. Hopefully this works! I also added the 249 and 250 cios (obviously so USB loader could run)

Hello,

In what format is your usb support (wbfs, fat32, NTFS) ??
FAT 32 is recommended.

Given your syscheck report, you are missing the CIOS 249, you can use Modmii to install the cios 249 and update your hack ==>https://gbatemp.net/threads/modmii-for-windows-official-support-topic.207126/

Your homebrew channel is on version 1.0.8, you can update it with "hackmii installer".

latest version usb loader gx (1272) ==>https://sourceforge.net/projects/usbloadergx/

Thankyou I tried to update as you indicated. It still has problems with recognising the hdd. It is WBFS and used to work fine. What is the easiest way to convert to FAT32?
