I have the latest core and your config file from twitter/reddit but Mupen64PLUS Next doesn’t show up as a option for core association on switch even though it does on PC; even if I load the core from the “load core” option, it doesn’t seem to act any different then Mupen64 plus so I’m under the impression it’s not working for me atm? HD textures also don’t seem to load on switch but do on PC, anyone have any ideas as to what I’m doing wrong?

as for hd textures this might help

in terms of performance i load atmosphere and load hbmenu using an eshop title (nsp will work legit not necessary) i use pokemon quest. I then add the title id of my eshop title to loader.ini in the atmosphere folder. then when i click pokemon quest it loads to hbmenu with full ram (critical) then i load retroarch. I am working on making a tut with all my files bios etc.

Thanks for the response, I did nothing new but my majora’s Mask textures started working, OoT isn’t even loading the rom so I prob screwed up the Htc conversion. I’m still on SX OS using the old nsp, I know the team doesn’t support either of those but I figured if it was an issue then it just wouldn’t work, but it’s not even showing up as a core option unlike on my pc. Is there a difference between using an NSP and the Pokémon quest method in terms of accessing “full ram”, are they equivalent methods with equal results?

Large texture packs take long to load.
1gb majoras pack takes like 30sec+

I left it alone for 5 minutes and nothing appeared, so I just don’t think it was detecting it, but it’s working now so I guess I’m ok. Regarding Mupen next, I know the team doesn’t support the NSP or SX OS, but is Mupen64 Plus Next not showing up as a core option when selecting a game an indication that I don’t have it set up right?

What version of Retroarch are you on? If it's 1.7.5 then try updating the assets. Your RA might not know to look for mupen-next.

Yah I’m still on 1.7.5, I tried updating my database and assets on pc and copying it to my switch but it didn’t seem to update the version (think pc still says 1.7.5 too), don’t know if any other way to update without WiFi. But if I load the core on 1.7.5 manually and then load the ROM would retroarch respond in the same way? Because I can do that now but it doesn’t seem to act any different than regular Mupen, although I’ve only tried the Zelda titles.

Edit - so I went an updated retroarch, it’s still says 1.7.5 but mupen64 plus next is now an option and MM is running at full speed! Only issue I’m running into is momentarily lag every time I reach a new zone I believe where textures are loading (as I have HD textures on),I don’t lag running in said area afterwards, is there a fix for this? I left it running a couple mins before I tried moving but there were many pocket areas I had initial slow downs in. Also, with Majoras Mask specifically, those black boxes covering up things like the title screen and many cutscenes, is there a solution to that problem? I was holding out thinking this Dynarec was a magic fix for that..

Stop using SX OS.

The stuttering when you go into a new area is expected behavior. The newest version of mupen-next has some patches to minimize the stuttering, but it only works on Atmosphere. And for those graphical glitches, you need to turn Framebuffer Emulation to True. This will degrade performance however (unless recent builds/settings have improved FBEmu performance, I'm not sure tbh).

When did they ever say or imply they are using sxos...

The part you bolded just means that they’re using a build without the jit (all standard nightlies don’t have the jit)

Do people even read beyond a single post nowadays?
Edit: Not trying to flame, but it's just that all the issues that appear in this thread can be solved by just reading a few posts and stop using SXOS and outdated builds.

Oh, sorry, made that post shortly after I woke up :P

If they stopped using SXOS that would stop crashing and compatibility issues, the small lags/stutters will probably still happen though. Using the latest nightly also won’t change anything, the small lags/stutters will still happen. Only way to stop the stutters is to use M4XWs Special(tm) jit build with a compatible CFW

I’m still insecure about using other CFW’s because of the lack of an EMUNAND, it’s the reason I chose SXOS to begin with. I know using a new nightly on an old NSP causes issues and I don’t know what this “jit” is but I suppose that’s an issue I can’t avoid with SX OS. I guess my only other question now is what concerns or things should I be wary of when operating without an EMUNAND if I used Atmosphere? And is the issue with framebuffer being turned on something that will ever be fixed? Missing cutscenes really sucks.

I don’t know much about it, but I know that the jit stops the small lags that happen when you do something for the first time.

Don’t use an NSP if you want to use N64 at all

If you don’t install any NSPs or cheat in online games while using atmos you’ll probably not get banned (pretty much nobody has gotten banned for purely homebrew in atmosphere)

What? framebuffer emulation works fine, only negative thing that happens is that you’ll get a performance decrease

I read up on JIT and think I understand it’s importance a little better now. As for not using an NSP, downloading a free Eshop title like Pokémon Quest and using it to boot home brew menu is not the same as an NSP correct? Using a physical cart (not dumped) to boot has the same effect right? Regarding the frame buffer, by a drop in performance do you mean FPS drops? Is it a substantial drop? Because the way your describing it makes it feel like your trading one bad situation for another.

The real issue is that SX OS does not have JIT patches yet. It will always run bad in SX until they add the patches.

I have answered this for you actually earlier.

So it is kind of taboo but this was all very confusing for me so i figured hey let me check into this and here is what i found. So yes typically if you had eshop access pokemon quest is a great choice since it is FREE! But some of us do not have such access (like me) so using an nsp of pokemon quest works just fine! (Yay) it does not need to be “legit”. From there you just take the title id and add it to loader.ini. If you use sxos for xci who cares! So do i! Just press vol button while booting then when you go to load payload just boot to either fusee primary or hekate make sure you use the patched atmosphere files and poof good speeds no stutter. Id highly recommend donating to m4xw (1$ one lousy dollar? You dont have a dollar to donate? I mean really?). I think i am forced to make an in depth tut because we keep getting the same questions...

I've been following the thread for a really long time but yes I'd say someone making an in depth tutorial for all the rest of the users would be amazing. Having to search 50 plus pages for different info would be daunting for newcomers on how to set up mupen next and retroarch for full speed usage. I suck at writing up essays, papers, and tutorials for others to easily follow lol.
