Things you miss from old school

Let’s see... I miss the prices. Consoles and accessories were far way more cheap than now. I also miss when the default controllers were wired. Even though I got more recent consoles like the Wii and Switch, I always find a way to plug cables into the controllers, even if they are not plugged into anything. I remember plugging usb cables into the wiimote (with no more purpose than making them wired even if they were not) and those usb cables into the Wii. Also, they made better games (for me) than right now. Actual games just have better graphics. We saw sm4sh which was a whole disaster for me and smash Melee.

Television back in the 90's - Early 2000's was something else.. But what I miss the most is kids' television (Cartoons). I was fortunate enough to grow up in the 90's and early 2000's which allowed me to experience a multitude of cartoon series. Back then you were able to travel through time and watch timeless classics like Looney Tunes, Tom and Jerry, and Disney Shorts from as far back as the 40's. Hell, I even watched shows that my parents grew up with like the original Scooby-Doo and Thundercats. Also, I was able to enjoy a golden age of newer cartoons like the Spielberg Shows (Animaniacs, Freakazoid, and Tiny Toons), as well as, revolutionary animation from the Batman The Animated Series show. I even got to be there when hits like Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh first came out. But nowadays it seems like all this goodness that was so easily accessible to me as a child, is nearly impossible to find now. At the present, most children don't even know about the shows I just listed, and even if they wanted to watch them now it would be very difficult to view them without subscriptions to 4 or 5 different services. It's all just shameful how children's television has turned into a pit of memes and advertisement.

I'd argue that old-school console prices were far worse than they are now. The PS2 was set at a launch price of 749 Australian dollars while the PS4 was launched at 549 AUD.

What I mostly miss in 'old skool' in regards to gaming is that back then the spotlight was reserved for...well..."non franchise games". It's not entirely correct because the current classics originated back then and there was the occasional sequel to a game. But you could open up a game magazine and read page after page after page about games you never heard about. While this is still true if you follow indie games (though page turning is changed by checking websites or youtube ), every major release is a reboot, a sequel, prequel or a spin-off.

I was thinking the same thing. While probably not as bad as in Australia, the consoles have more or less had a constant price. Which means that when you take inflation into account, they become cheaper each generation. The same goes for games: for the same price you get a much more sophisticated game, and unlike back then, the prices don't nosedive after a couple weeks or months.

I miss when you couldn't look up how to beat a video game on the internet, and you had to figure it out yourself or ask friends and family for tips - OR - find that pal with a strategy guide and flip around to figure it out

Something about not having every solution at your fingertips made the games feel like more of an adventure

Also I miss just having time to spend countless hours on a video game - being an adult sucks

Might not be exactly what you're asking, but I really miss the weight of a game store before the internet. Being surrounded by games without knowing what every single one was about already, actually looking at many many boxes before buying something. Sure, that came with the issue of not knowing what was good, but there was a charm about that too.

When Fortnite wasn't in existence, when we had to find in-game secrets without any outside intelligence, and when the N64 was hot.

While I'm glad smartphones exist and make life easier, I kinda miss the times where they weren't a thing and you could only really access the internet properly from a computer (also, I still think pressing buttons to navigate a UI feels much better than a touch screen, even if it's slower). It's not easy to give up smartphones, because in today's world they are a necessity. I wouldn't be able to keep in touch with my classmates fast enough when information needs to be spread quickly, for example. The old internet was also better (in some cases), with lighter webpages (because y'know, most people had dial-up connections) and no oneclickads.
I also miss watching TV. I too, watched a bunch of cartoons when I was growing up. I grew up in the 2000's, but channels here aired cartoons as old as from the 40's (AFAIK they still do), so I basically grew up as if I was a 90's kid. Nowadays, I don't really have time for watching TV. Not because I don't want to, but my school schedule is so crammed I barely have any free time and I usually spend that with more active stuff, like hanging out with friends or playing video games.

I miss the excitement when buying a videogame (like in the 80s).No internet only monthly magazines keeps you informed.The monthly "conventions" with friends from all over,talking and playing games,exchanging news and games.

I miss...well. not sure. I'm quite happy with the future. I'm disappointed we're not further along.

I suppose I miss being able to plop in a game and play it immediately. I miss turn-based RPGs. I miss all the time I've wasted. That's about it.

That, and manuals! Physical manuals! I loved reading those on the way home before playing a game. Nowadays it's either digital or you just don't get one. And digital manuals suck. If you're already at your PC/console where you would read it, why not just play the game?

Missed 80's and 90's. My favourite years. To be honest, I loved 1900's too but too bad that I wasn't born this time, lol.

Anyway... Hang out with friends at the playground, bike on my own visited friends, sleepover, many family getting together, and simple life. Right now, complicate! Not many family getting together anymore thanks to gadget tech.. Thanks to facebook too which they cannot lived without either. Glue their noses on the mobile and smart tv. Oh yeah.. Less playground which I have seen right now except kids only. Also I have seen many parents even grandparents are bad with kids at fast food restaurants. They put mobile/ipads on the table for kids to stare instead of having a cute conversation or playing with them. SAD! The future isn't bright for it is getting worse.
