Hacking All new to Wii U

Just want to be sure here. If I get a USB hard drive (with no external power), put my Wii U games on it, and plug in the Y cable in the two usb



Can you recommend a hard drive to use for Wii / Wii U backups? Other than that it should be USB 2.0 ?

Any type of drive should be sufficient, it can't be said if one is better than the other, just as long as it splits into 2 USB plugs.

CBHC could brick your Wii U if U make mistake just best install Haxchi safe way ! Some game require at least 21 GB cant remember n good luck!

It doesn't matter what the drive is formatted to, the console will recognise that it isn't formatted correctly, and will use its own format once you plug it in. WUP backups are meant to be put on an SD card temporarily, then installed to the specially formatted drive using WUP installer GX2.

I actually ran mario kart Wii off my pen drive.. The only frustration is the lag/unstable gameplay.. I'll find a decent hard drive for my Wii U games, and figure out what to do with my wii backups and n64 / GC's.. The Wii U I'm planning on buying, is the Mario kart premium edition with 32gb onboard storage..

You can use the same drive if you use Wii VC injects (more effort to create and install them), or you can use a SD card for vWii stuff, or you can use 2 HDDs, it's up to you.

I don't think putting Wii games on an SD card is a good solution for me. I think I'd rather buy two HDDs and Label them "Wii" and "WiiU".. 500gb ones aren't that expenssive. For me, the performance of the games is key.

Exactly, since that's pretty much the only way to get the games onto the specially formatted drive, and once they're installed they can be deleted from the SD.

Okay that's something, even though being a little cumbersome. Kinda reminds me of installing VPKs for ps vita (sorry if I offend someone by mentioning Sony )

It's been a while since I installed a WUP game, but from what I remember, games in WUP format come in lots of .app files in a single folder, so the FAT32 limitation doesn't apply, you can still fit a <4GB game onto it.

That's nice. So if I for some reason had an .iso file, would the contents of that file (if extracted) be equal to a WUP "file (folder)" ?

Wii U games don't come in ISO format, so I'm sure if you found a WUP game on another site, it would be in a zipped file, which would extract to said folder. But, a program called 'Wii U USB Helper' is probably the most convenient way to get all your games. It was shut down, and I don't think I'm allowed to link to the fix.

Yes, Brain Age is the most commonly used DS game for CFW, which you must buy from the eShop. There are 2 ways you can use it - you can either use it to install standard Haxchi, which requires you to launch the DS game after every reboot for CFW, or ColdBoot Haxchi, which uses the same DS game but launches it on startup. As KleinesSinchen mentioned, this can be dangerous, as moving or deleting the DS game before uninstalling CFW will lead to a brick. I use CBHC personally, and it's safe as long as you can trust yourself not to move or delete it (the name of the DS game changes to 'DON'T TOUCH ME' to remind you). But for 5.5.2 and 5.5.3 the guide still links to a very unstable exploit (needs a lot of tries/reboots). Recently a better alternative was released.

I personally would not install Coldboot Haxchi (CBHC); the opinions differ on this point. Following https://wiiu.hacks.guide/ from the beginning to then end will suggest to install CBHC. One thing is important before you decide:
Read the warnings before using CBHC! Not paying attention to the warnings might transform your Wii U into a paperweight.

I personally prefer Haxchi vs CBHC. I like choosing what cfw is running at the beggining rather than it being run automatically on top of hat there's like 0 brick risk with just Haxchi.

Yeah I have no issues buying the game, I'm just worried about system updates, since it is stated in the guide that all update blocking should be turned off. Is it still safe or will I be forced to update?

there's other ways to brick with CBHC not just deleting/moving the ds game. I believe unlinking your nintendo id is one of them. I recommend he sticks with Haxchi specially since he posted a wiiu thread on the wii section.

The console updates automatically, and the only way to prevent it is to add a DNS to the internet settings, which prevents eshop access. I believe CBHC has protection against this, as it fakes your system version as '99.99.99' on startup to trick it into thinking it doesn't need any more updates.

The Wii u I'm going to buy has some Mario games already on it. Is it possible to transfer them to another sd card? (A bigger one)
