Hi guys.

I'm completely new to the Wii U world. I'm going to buy one very soon, but I have some questions before hand.

I've already read alot of threads about this, but seem to stumble over all the technical stuff.
So i hope you can answer with not-to technical answers since I'm still learning :-)

Okay my questions are:

1. The people who sell the Wii U (used) have all got the version 5.5.3.E and I cannot find any info that states that, that particular version can be modded. Can that version also be modded?

2. Will I be able to play backup/burned Wii games on the Wii U?
3. What media should I use if I want to create a backup of my Wii U games? Dual-Layer DVDS? Blu-Ray?
4. Can N64, and Gamecube games (As well as Wii games) Run off the same source? (i.e. Hard-drive/USB?)

I know some of the questions may have been answered, but I did not seem to get a straight answer.

1. Yes, any version can be modded.
2. Yes, but you will need a seperate drive for Wii games, as your Wii U games should be installed as WUP, which requires 1 drive and can't be partitioned.
3. HDDs and SDs are the only way, and SD cards have been known for low speed, so use a HDD.
4. You can have 'forwarders' on the Wii U menu which link to emulators in Wii mode, but you will need to mod the Wii mode (which is just as easy as Wii U mode modding) and will have support for SD and USB loading, gamepad support and boosted clock speeds.
Also as a note, CFW can be installed for free but requires you to launch the browser every time after rebooting, but if you buy a cheap DS eshop game, you can launch CFW on boot.

1. Yes, any version can be modded.
2. Okay so I could in theory use, 1 harddrive for Wii U games, and another for Wii/GC/N64 games, right?
3. I'm tinkering with my parents Wii right now, just to start somewhere, and am I correct, when saying that games from USB stutters? As well as the burned backup discs.. Don't know if that's normal or not
4. I saw someplace that someone got a permanent fix for this issue? Don't know if it's that game you mention.

Sorry I didn't clarify. 1 drive is used for Wii U only, another for Wii games, and your emulators can be kept on your Wii USB drive, or on your SD so you don't have to swap them every time. Any games on USB shouldn't stutter, it's SD you should worry about for Wii and Wii U, emulator speed should be fine. The guide you should use (https://wiiu.hacks.guide/get-started) still states states that you need to buy a DS game for CFW on coldboot.

I found the link.. But its only on 5.5.2 so maybe that does not work on 5.5.3

That guide was last updated when 5.5.2 was latest. Quoting from the guide I linked, 'This guide will work on all Wii U devices in all regions on the version 5.5.0 to 5.5.3.' My console was also on that version and it went smoothly.

Okay thanks, then it will probably be the guide to follow. Which drive do you use for your WII U games? And do you experience any stutter at all? For demanding games for example

As long as the drive is USB 2.0 and has a Y-splitter, there shouldn't be any problem. I'm not sure about USB 3 drives, I think they're hit or miss. Personally, I bought a 2.5" laptop SATA drive and a cheap SATA to USB enclosure, and it actually seems faster than loading from disc, especially in games like Xenoblade X, which is probably the most demanding game on the console.

Yeah and the size of that game is about 20gigs..!

I'm just worried, when the Wii I'm fiddling with now, stutters when using backup discs (no scratches), how well will the Wii U perform.. I know they're not the same.. But the wii should run games better on the disc, than on my usb (very cheap) thumbdrive.. right?

Disc and USB load speeds are usually fairly equal on Wii and Wii U, but just as a note, backup Wii discs won't work on a Wii U, same with Wii U backup discs, which don't exist AFAIK. If you have a large backup disc collection, it might be best converting them to a digital format, with CleanRip on your Wii or create an image with IMGBurn, and moving them to a hard drive. I'd also advise against using a flash drive, their load times are fast enough but reads/writes are limited, so corruption could be very possible, especially since you said it was a cheap drive.

Don't use thumb/pen/flash drives!! They are unreliable when used on the Wii/Wii U and will most likely cause you great frustration.

I actually ran mario kart Wii off my pen drive.. The only frustration is the lag/unstable gameplay.. I'll find a decent hard drive for my Wii U games, and figure out what to do with my wii backups and n64 / GC's.. The Wii U I'm planning on buying, is the Mario kart premium edition with 32gb onboard storage..

An excellent starting point for reading is this sticky thread:
https://gbatemp.net/threads/guide-community-noob-guide-to-wii-u-hacking.451297/
But for 5.5.2 and 5.5.3 the guide still links to a very unstable exploit (needs a lot of tries/reboots). Recently a better alternative was released.

I personally would not install Coldboot Haxchi (CBHC); the opinions differ on this point. Following https://wiiu.hacks.guide/ from the beginning to then end will suggest to install CBHC. One thing is important before you decide:
Read the warnings before using CBHC! Not paying attention to the warnings might transform your Wii U into a paperweight.

Maybe the better solution will be the.. yeah, better solution for me.. But how about the "compatible haxchi game" part ?

Yes they can work for a while, some better then others, some not at all, but the constant writing to the flash drive will cause it to fail.

They are only rated for so many write cycles and the Wii can be taxing on them. This has been discussed many times in the forums. Just want you to have a pleasant experience, so when possible move to an external hard drive.

Of course, that's the plan :-) I will get the most pleasant experience, when it runs smoothly instead of this, laggy thing.

Just want to be sure here. If I get a USB hard drive (with no external power), put my Wii U games on it, and plug in the Y cable in the two usb

Can you recommend a hard drive to use for Wii / Wii U backups? Other than that it should be USB 2.0 ?
