Honestly majority of RTS games were being produced by a handful of companies who just moved on. Command & Conquer for example stopped being made when EA made one bad game and decided that was good enough a reason to stop making them. Blizzard seemed to have moved their focus from RTS to MMO's/MOBAs over RTSs. And Microsoft is being Microsoft.

But they've just released a new C&C game! Can't believe people are still hating on them despite knowing what's best for the fans.

EA is the reason.

Thankfully you can still play the old games online though.
But would be nice if they had re-releases on the Switch.

The Same happened to Point and Click Adventures ...
Was my favorite genre when I was a child and still love them, lucky some indie developer (which often are not that good sadly) and daedalic made some new ones in the last few years, still nothing compared to the good old times where more then 50% of the games made were Point and Click Adventure XD

But yeah a good RTS like Generals (don't even need any flashy super grafic just something that doesn't look like its more then 10 years old) with some new terraints, buildings, units and a small ammount of new features maybe and it would be an instand buy.

I don't know if I can +1 that.

Point and click I would have said was technology moving on. Same reason we don't have text adventures, or indeed point and click replaced text adventure.

Alternatively much like someone said above with the moba fad possibly being a thing that pulled focus it could be point and click in the classic lucasarts or western takes on the matter had their focus pulled by hidden object games.
This feels more like space sims

Artistically I would say there was much left to explore with point and click, as evidenced by a bunch of DS games when people realised.

Back on topic I should also note Homeworld got a fairly nice remaster the other year as well as a prequel in Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak. StarCraft: Remastered was also a thing not so long ago.

Depending upon what you like you might also consider some of the things like Hearts of Iron, Frostpunk or even some of the roguelites/roguelikes in things like FTL: Faster Than Light, Convoy and other efforts there. They scratch much the same itch for me. The Total War franchise also saw its resurgence continue with a whole bunch of games. I should also say look at mods as there are and have long been quite interesting ones (ignoring it being a mod that spawned this DOTA/MOBA lark many of the best mods I have ever played have been such). Open source have a few interesting things as well, especially if you like the more old school approaches.

Red Alert 2 and Battle for Middle-Earth both still have a very strong modding community that regularly release really high quality mods with new story modes, factions and multiplayer maps.
I'm pretty sure the same is the case for other RTS games.

There are also a couple of kickstarters for RTS games from Indie developers that I've seen.
Iron Harvest is definitely one I'm keeping my eye on, even though I prefer mine in a more 'fantastical' or 'alternative timeline' setting:
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/kingartgames/iron-harvest

The big competitors pretty much dropped RTS though.

Red Alert 2 still gets mod releases? I did not know that. Last mod I played was for C&C generals

My favorite at the moment is Mental Omega: http://mentalomega.com/
The complete mod will add a new campaign of about 70 missions and a new faction.
At the moment about 3/4th of all of this is playable.

There's a lot more mods though.
Red Alert 2 mod list: https://www.moddb.com/games/cc-red-alert-2
RA2 - Yuri's Revenge mod list: https://www.moddb.com/games/cc-red-alert-yuris-revenge/mods

I did a quick search on moddb.com and there are still mods being developed for nearly all C&C games.

There is a lot of small indie RTS titles out and more in development, it's not like the genre is completely gone but it's limited to small studios and enthusiasts. The big studios don't want to risk the kind of money it would take to develop a large AAA title on a genre that's not currently very popular and can't really be ported to other platforms.

RTS is still a genre that i miss, luckily atleast there are some grand stratagy games like stellaris and hearts of iron 4, but it's not the same as it used to be, the fast paced RTS games like the command and conquer games. The only one that still comes close to the genre RTS that is still alive imo is starcraft 2.

This is probably the best explanation for the situation. Truth is that there are still quite some RTS'es being made. Some pretty decent ones, even. I listed the ones I know not too long ago here, so I don't have to repeat myself here. Or wait: in addition to that, you can add the 8-bit trilogy, sins of a solar empire franchise, that homeworld remake, and that warhammer 40'000 RTS game at the very least.

...but then reality happens. Last E3, EA comes along and reinvents command & conquer as a mobile game and as a MOBA. It's apparently terrible, but that's not the point: WHY THE HELL DOES ONE GAME GENERATE MORE PUBLICITY THAN THE ENTIRE REST OF THE FREAKIN' REAL TIME STRATEGY GENRE COMBINED ?????

So what happend to games like Command & Conqure? Not hip anymore? I would love games like that on Nintendo Switch.
Petroglyph games consists of former westwood employees. They've announced 8-bit armies coming to the switch, though it's apparently gone quiet since then.

I've also heard that tooth and nail is coming to the switch, but that's also gone quiet. Also: I'm not sure it counts.I mean...when a guy like (the former) Totalbiscuit says it's an actual RTS that can be played with a controller then there must be some merit in it. But I cannot attest it being the case until I've played it myself.
