I bought the PS4 version and am loving the game through and through. I have relatives overseas that do not have easy access to home consoles, but they all do have a 3DS. I was just curious to know if there were any plans on the board to have this game's official localization ported to the 3DS version / if it were even possible

For someone to take on this project, they would have to work privately while never mentioning they were translating the game.

Once finished, the fully re-translated game would have to be quietly released somewhere like at that iso site.

Anyone who announces their intention would be a fool because so many fans translated (and hacked) games were killed off by Square Enix's cease & desist lawsuits.

Ahh fair, I understand. Damn that is a shame. I hope somebody works on it eventually. Would be nice to just have it, even with the Switch version coming out eventually

I imagine it would be a stealth release because that's how the fan translation of DQ7 on the 3DS ended; SE sent a C&D to the translator because they injected the PS1 script into the 3DS game, which is copyrighted.

The game's script is copyrighted. The most realistic outcome would either be an ad hoc translation based off it or a stealth release. Expect neither due to the sheer volume of the game.

What's crippling me is the freaking bottom screen font, but a translation is very doable.

only way would be to rewright the script entirely dirrectly ripping it counts as copyrighted content

Or release it as a script injector program that requires the person to obtain a PS4 iso or the necessary files from one themselves.

Oh, it's doable, but the sheer amount of text in the game makes it extremely daunting. I'd personally love it if it came to fruition, but I'd be surprised if it ever happened.

I mean if the text is the same between the games it really shouldn't be that daunting, a script could be written to take text from one and replace in another since I would at the very least imagine the file formats are different, the tedious part would most likely be formatting since text may not have as much room to fit on 3DS? who knows, I haven't really looked at the game on any platform.

Could be done but releasing it would be shady, as mentioned in this thread even fan translations of other DQ titles try to keep it hush hush till release, let alone just ripping a script.

Welp, the font issue is gone, game is 90% translatable, looking for a debugger or hacker to help me decrypt/decompress a few files containing text, other than that a translator, if anyone is interested let me know, there is a plus to where i live, it's worst than russia, so i can ignore any C&D from square, they can rot in hell for all i care.

But any site you host it on has to comply with international copyright laws, so I'd still stay on the down low about hosting/distributing anything until there's something worth distributing.

Or torrents. :D

I can make my own patch from scratch, since it's a translation, the text we put is owned by us, not squeenix, the patch can be applied to any file, meaning the sole responsible party is the end user, it's like selling butter knifes, it could be used to hurt individuals, but who am i to know what the end user would do. This is the oldest trick in the book.

EDIT: Welp, this went bad for some reason...

You've made it very clear that you don't speak Japanese, and so all you're going to end up doing is one of the following:

Pointlessly translating it to English over an insane period of time, which by the time it releases wouldn't be worth it as everyone would have by then finished it on PS4,PC and Switch.
Copying the text from the English PC/PS4 release and inserting it into the 3DS game. Which results in a script not being owned by you, unless you edit so much of it that its no longer recognisable.

Neither option is quick, and only one of the two ends up in you 'owning' the script.
Also, you can't really 'own' something thats a translation of another language, because its still the original companies plot and dialogue, just given different words, but the same meanings.

The english transcript is owned by the translation team behind it, this is why most game go or a localization instead of a translation, i get to own the script if i localize it my way, copyright works on literal translation, this is why book authors don't sue each other, or even movies, you even get to see a shitty thor movie and marvel doesn't really give a crap because it's pointless, SE only gives their C&D because they want the hype to stay alive even though it won't happen and it's gonna end up like DQ 7 for 3ds, and i guess you misunderstood me, when i said i can make a patch fo my own, it means coding one from the ground up, and no using Xdelta or already existing software, i can encrypt the content and thus it no longer falls under copyright as it is random data, i can give instructions on how to decrypt and patch "The file you want to patch", this way i could do a fan translation in the HQ of SE while updating them on my progress without them being able to lift a finger.

And we care why exactly? If he’s going to port the PS4 script over, I assure you the people who want to play the 3ds version in english couldn’t care less about the legality of it. All he has to do is keep it on the down low

Hell, even if it is a fan translation he'd have to be really secretive about it, since an official release is out there already.

I would love it if you could get the PS4/PC English text on the 3DS version. let's care about the legality of it after it's done :)
