So happy this is still ongoing! ✌ Keep it up JAMS! You don't know how happy this will make us Phantasy Star fans, or do you!? ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ
Indeed, some users troll for the reasons stated, but valid criticism has also been posted in this thread. In fact, most of the criticism I've read centered around one central theme. Jam's back now, so there's really no need for 4-post users to show up now leading self-righteous crusades. One must understand that this thread is filled with mostly diehards of the PSO universe, so naturally we're all very supportive of the project -- including the critics.SOOO great to see this project alive and even making progress
please keep it up and know that u have much support from many of us!!
p.s. pay no mind to the impatient, selfish, entitled trolls, especially the ones who fail to realize just how complex and tough your work is, and the fact that you're not getting paid a dime for it
I made an account just to say thank you for keeping up with this, Jam! I've been following it for a while, and I always love seeing the passion in a project no matter how long it takes and how many people complain to go faster (I follow Half-Life 2 mods for the most part, Black Mesa took something like 9 years to make lol). Take your time and do what you need to do, you're doing god's work and I among a lot of other people will be very thankful when this releases. On a related note, will I need to have a copy of PSP2I beforehand for this to work? A lot of sites are getting hit as of late and I want to grab a copy before a metric fuck ton of old games go the way of the dinosaur.
You could always import. Infinity is surprisingly cheap online. Like $10 cheap. There are "other ways" to get the game but I can't help you there, obviously. On a related note, will I need to have a copy of PSP2I beforehand for this to work? I've been watching this project since it's inception, and as much as I may also be one of the many people who is tired of waiting and wishes it was just done already, at the same time I can completely understand why things are taking so long. As a programmer who is also working on translation projects among other things, I know first hand how simple things can seem at first until you really start diving in and realize that the task is much more complex than you had originally anticipated. My faith in this project has wavered quite a lot over the years, but seeing Jam back again at least gives me some hope that things aren't dead just yet. I wish you all the best in finishing the translation, and I, like many others, am very eager to see the results. I've touched the game on and off, but I don't want to commit to fully getting into it until the patch is finished and released.
Also, to all those who are saying that things would go "so much faster/better" if they open sourced it, all I have to say to that is: no, no they wouldn't, and you have no idea what you are talking about. I've been working on OSS projects for almost a decade, and when it comes to this argument, it generally comes from a place of ignorance or selfishness. People are very quick to say they will contribute and help when the oppertunity isn't quite there, but once it is actually presented to them, and they see the actual work and tedium that can be involved, they tend to back out fairly quickly or just disappear entirely. I can cite several projects, such as PS Nova's translation, as a testament to this. When we made the decision to OSS the project, there were at least 5-6 people insisting that they would help out, but sure enough, none of them can be found now, and they never did end up actually contributing anything. And that's not even getting into the issues of theft and those who try to claim ownership of other people's work, which I've also seen many, many times as well. I can perfectly understand and respect Jam's reasons for not wanting the patch to be open source, as doing so has the potential to bring a lot of hassle and headaches with very little to gain, especially at this point when things are nearly completed. Ask yourself this, are you wanting them to OSS the patch so that you can play it early, or so that you can actually contribute to its completion? If your answer is the former, then you're completely missing the point of OSS in the first place.

Jamrules do you need any help at all?
Soft subs? I know a few people that undubbed Persona 1 on PSP and had to change the subtitles to match the Japanese voices. Do you have a Discord account?Great post, thanks for taking the time to write this up.
Excellent points in regards to open sourcing, it's good to hear from someone who has actually tried it.
Another issue as I see it is that most of the work is trying to reverse engineer the game and recreate what it is doing.
Its not like there is a pre-defined spec and clearly defined tasks for people to work toward completing,
it requires research to determine what needs to be done and this is were most of the time is spent.
I would say that collaborating on something like this is much easier if starting from early stages.
Indeed, there has been some valid criticism along the way.
Hopefully we'll get there
We won't be distributing the game itself, just the patch when the time comes.
Of course you can dump your UMD copy to an iso
Thanks for asking, in terms of the hacking end I'm making progress on these on my own at the moment.
Though there are 2 things that I might be able to get help on.
One, I would be interested to know if there are other games that use soft-subs.
I've looked into most of this now but it would be good to know if there are other examples out there.
Secondly, slightly unrelated but I would be interested in what everyone uses for task/project management software.
I've been looking for a good piece of software to help me make notes on what needs to be done so I don't lose track of where I am, preferably free. It would be good to hear what people's suggestions are.
Any help with these would be appreciated.
As always, I would like to say thanks to everyone who is supporting Weyu and myself.
Haven't popped my head in here for a while, but the good news as you can see is that Jam is back and dev has resumed.
As he mentioned, currently we're working on the subs. I've translated the movies and he's figuring out a way to apply them to the game that works for both PPSSPP and real PSPs.
As for the freeze issue that was our major obstacle for a long time: it was a 100% freeze in the past but Jam seems to have nailed the fix, but I haven't done enough extensive testing to say so for sure.
But just that it hasn't appeared again is a great sign of course.
Once the subs are done, the remaining UI/tech issues need to be worked out, and I have a lot of QC to do (I can finally access all of the game including parts that were crashing before).
No timeline but will update when there's something notable, maybe I'll record some footage & images too to show the current progress after we get the subs working.
