Because they don't sell jigs in my country, i said this before many, many times. I'd have to order from the US and do you know how expensive it gets to order even a 3 dollar item from abroad? Especially from the US into Europe where i live?
You're ordering from china for most of these.

You cannot guarantee it won't hit pin 4. You will not be there with people using aliminium foil. By telling people it's safe in general, you are lying to them and endagering their device.

Have you touched aluminium foil? It's thin. It bends easily. When you bend it hard enough, it turns thick and can actually produce sharp edges. I wouldn't put that shit in my $300 device.

A jig is plastic, rigid. They have clear paths and cascade against the pins in a safe manner that won't fuck em up. Bent copper wire is very bendy like aluminium foil and thin. It won't fuck up pins like regular steel paperclips. Most importantly, all are the same.

I'm tellin all you people readin this thread now. Either you get soldering skills or use a jig off Ebay, Aliexpress, or make one yourself. There's a reason why the homebrew for installing nsps is called "Tinfoil". That shit is a JOKE.

IF you make it a millimeter in width, like the video says, then no, it will NOT touch pin 4, it wont even come close to it, it will only bridge pins 9 and 10. When you slide the joycon in the rail, the piece of foil is secured in place, it doesn't move around so no, it wont touch any other pins except the pins it's supposed to touch
I NEVER said it's safe. Every method, even the jigs, have risks, none of them are 100% safe. Foil is an alternative if you can't buy a jig

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

You're ordering from china for most of these.

The import part is still the issue. Importing anything in the EU from any country, doesn't really matter what country it is, is a complete and utter MESS when it comes to customs, believe me i tried when i wanted to import certain games from china. It's really not worth the complications and the mess.

By condoning foil, you are heavily implying it is a safe method to use. The jigs don't have any risks if you buy a quality one. That's the whole point. Buy one jig, never have problems with entering rcm again.

I ordered from this guy: https://switchjigs.com/products/switch-rcm-jig-glow-in-the-dark

I live in Japan. He ships internationally for five bucks.

I think you need to really really really consider this and stop making excuses. Five bucks for shipping. It works like a charm every time.

I think you're forgetting that every country has different laws when it comes to imports.

Every time that i talk about any method of entering RCM i ALWAYS stress that every method has risks, every single one of them, i never say that any method is 100% safe. Also"Buy one jig, never have problems entering RCM again" yeah that kind of works for EVERY method of entering RCM. You either activate autoRCM or just leave your console on sleep mode. Seeing as i activated autoRCM i only had to use foil once, and only once, never have to use it again and the same applies to every other method

There is no complication. You are not the mail service. It's just takes long wait time to be delivered. I am willing to wait for a product that won't send my switch to the shadow realm.

Seriously look at the purchaser list on that aliexpress link I posted. People from all kinds of countries buying from there. Shipping isn't the problem. It's all about how cheap people want to be.

It's not just the time it takes, hell i don't mind waiting either. It's the customs tax. Granted it's not the same for every country in the EU but in my country, customs taxes are abusive and can turn a 5 dollar item into an over 20 dollar(or Euro in my case) purchase

OP will deal with import policies same as dealing with any foreign shipment. That has nothing to do with the product.

The "risk" is the hacking of the device, not the method of entering rcm.

People use jigs because they are safe and easy to use. They are consistant (assuming you have a good one). A strip of aluminium foil is gonna get fucked up over time. You'd either have to make it over and over or keep that strip in the same glass jar as Beast's rose in the Svalbard seed vault under the watchful eye of The Avengers.

I'm not sure why you brought AutoRCM up. AutoRCM has nothing to do with initial rcm entry methods as that is a later choice available to the user with it's own unrelated risks. We're talking about a non-autorcm method of entering rcm that everyone has to do at least once.

@Ashura66 I can feel your pain trying to explain to folks that live in countries that rarely tax items from mail the concept that in some countries importing through mail services may get bureaucratic and expensive if you are unlucky enough.

You have NO idea the bureaucracies that go on in my country, plus the expenses. Hell even if someone tries to send something to me from abroad(Like i once had a friend who lives in the US send over some items to me), not only is there a ton of bureaucracy but there is also costs involved, TONS of costs. And for someone on a budget like me...

The import bit was not about the OP, it was MY specific case since people seem to be BAFFLED by the concept of over taxation and bureaucracy.
No, there are risks to entering RCM, no matter what method you use. No single method is 100% safe, even a high quality jig, if not used properly, can damage the pins. Foil is also easy to use. And while yes over time it's going to get fucked it still lasts for a very long time(Well depending on how much you use it really, i barely had to use it, i think i only used mine like twice or something.
I bring up AutoRCM as an option so you don't constantly have to use whatever method you want to enter RCM. Well that or just leaving your console on sleep mode like i used to do. Basically saying that whatever method you choose to use(And again i'm not forcing anyone to use the same method as me, i'm presenting foil as an ALTERNATIVE, despite what some people may believe), you really only need to use it once, thus minimizing whatever risks there are greatly

so ive been tring for ever and my switch refuses to go into RCM. Is it that my switch is "to old" (does this only work on new switchs?) or is it the rig (im using a paperclip)

Switch consoles can't be "too old" for RCM exploitation in its current form, but they can certainly be too new. Once you have your jig issue sorted out, tegraRCMSmash or whatever payload sender you use should be sending 0x7000 bytes if successful, or some number that's larger than zero if it failed. If you see exactly zero, it's more or less game over, that indicates a Switch that has the bug fixed (try two or three times to be sure though).

I don't use tinfoil, but i'm curious. What happens if you use pin 4?

There are people selling jigs on ebay from other countries in the EU. There should be no customs charges for those.

As long as it's inside the EU then no, there SHOULDN'T be any. I did look trough ebay when i first started getting into Switch modding but i couldn't find any jig being sold within the EU. Guess i'l have to look again

I believe it can short out your entire system, basically bricking it for good
So, are you telling me that anyone can make a jig that kills consoles? Or even worse, a perfect looking joycon that can completely kill any Switch by just plugging it? If i, for example, buy a used joycon, it can be tampered to brick the console?
This is a very serious design flaw...

Technically yes. I believe that for a while there was also a payload floating around, disguised as something good but it completely bricked your Switch though that one was a software thing, not a hardware thing. But yes, anyone malicious enough can make a perfectly harmless looking Jig but one that can severely damage your system and even kill it

One thing is a malicious payload. You must enter RCM by plugging a jig, do a button combo, plug a USB-C cable/dongle to the console and load the malicious payload.

But with this, you take apart a joycon rail, you solder pin 10 to pin 4 (invisible from the outside) and you have a console killer. Imagine it: you're in any gaming event, you want to play with more people, you plug a perfect looking joycon and your console is bricked for ever...

Kind of reminds me of that one USB drive that will completely FRY your pc from the inside if you plug it. Or your console for that matter. But yes, it's totally possible and there are people in the world malicious enough to do it
