Hey Guys,

I bought a Wii U second hand. It's in good condition and came with a bunch of games both on disc and stored on the console itself.
It also had this thing called Cold Boot Haxchi installed.
I found out that this was some clever hack in order to use something called Haxchi/Homebrew which lead me to this forum and I read about the rules in order to avoid bricking the system as a result of this installation.

Anyway, I've been having fun playing the games and I don't have an internet connection so I haven't had to worry about updates.
Recently though I received a genuine copy of Zelda BOTW which I was quite excited about , but when I went to play it the console started saying "applying update". Fearing this would break the non-bricking rules I cancelled. No harm seems to have been done, but I don't seem to be able to play this disc without installing whatever update is on it.

The questions I hope you can help me with are:
1) If I install whatever update is on the BOTW disc, is it a bricking risk?
2) Can I uninstall CBHC without an internet connection (how)?
3) If I uninstall CBHC will I lose any of the games which are stored on the console?

Any help much appreciated: This is all very new to me as my last games console was a PS1

What is your console FW ? BotW makes a mistake between system update and game update. You probably only need to update the game to get it running.
2. You can uninstall CBHC by going to the Homebrew launcher, loading the CBHC app and uninstalling.
3. You won't lose any game by uninstalling CBHC, you'll just have to load Haxchi everytime you want to go to CFW mode

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the replies so far.

I guess in answer to why would you pick Haxchi over ColdBoot Haxchi, I don't really understand how to use Haxchi or CFW and CBHC does seem to have a higher potential risk. I won't do any of the obvious things like formatting it or deleting the VC game, but when it said "applying update" after putting the BOTW disc in I panicked and thought I might be better off without CBHC.

I''m not sure what the firmware is, it just says 99999.
If a game is on a disc, I don't really understand why it would need to update or how it would do that from my console which isn't connected to the internet?

Do I need an internet connection to remove CBHC or can I just run Homebrew and the CBHC installer without one?

Sorry if these questions sound silly, but this is all new to me. :shy:

Oh i forgot it always says 99.99.99 with Haxchi/CBHC to block auto updates.
You can remove CBHC without an internet connection.
For the update BotW needs, it's because it needs the "day-1 patch" cause lol not all the files that the game needs to work are on the disc.

You can download the breath of the wild update patch with wiiu usb helper, then install it with wup installer.

If you want to learn about CBHC and WUP Installer, you can send me a pm, I'd be more than happy to help you out.

guys why are you saying for him to uninstall cbhc? makes no sense if its installed let it be ...

just let your console update, cbhc works on latest fw anyway so you can just put the disc in and let everything work really, dont listen to them, you dont need to use usb helper or anything complex even , cbhc works perfectly on latest fw just say yes to the disc and keep cbhc.

one caveat, if the previous owner decided to call Nintendo to delete his account/NNID...
he says he doesn't have internet on the console therefore even if the old user did went through the trouble of asking nintendo to delete in account it wont make a difference since his console isnt online to check anything.

Hey Guys,

So I found someone nearby who has as a non-hacked Wii U and doesn't have BOTW.
Under system settings the version was 5.5.1E

We disconnected the console from the internet and put the BOTW disc in and the same update was required which we went ahead with.
It took about 10 mins saying "Installing update to system memory"

After the update the game worked but when I looked at the version it was still 5.5.1E so I'm not sure what was updated?!?

botw has an update for the game itself ondisc which needs to be installed to play.
Its a game update not a system update.
