I would kill for a backup-loader or a flashcart. Honestly, if you have a Switch backup-loader or a flashcart on your hands, and there is an unpleasant person in the neighborhood, that needs to be taken care off, give me a call... we can make some diplomacy work here, you know...

I don't actually think there is anything that needs to be discussed. These threads always pop up when a console is modable/hackable.
They never lead anywhere and they are always the same.
You either want to use it or you dont.

honestly surprised we have not seen a flash cart by now
would be nice to have a second sd slot on the switch
2 200gb cards would be nice

Except the cartridge is not writable. (or at least, should not be writable.) It also remains to be seen if multiple titles can be stored in the cartridge memory space. (It is functionally identical to having multiple games on a Wii-U disc.) The potential to have something like an R4 card for the Switch is interesting though, where the console thinks it is launching a single game, but is instead launching another launcher. Bear in mind though that many switch titles are HUUUUUUUUGE compared to the titles for the 3DS and pals. A 200gb card might hold what--- 4 titles?

No, if you are talking piracy here you want a USB loader, where you can have a several TB capacity device. A pirate flashcart would be useful mainly for bootleg game titles made by indie developers. (assuming a reliable way to run unsigned code on stock firmwares is discovered, or the signing keys are discovered.)

I could see a custom cartridge being used as a trojan horse to get access to the console using a game though. (Cartridge software uses a weakness to somehow execute, spoofs being some other title ID, and writes a savegame, then exits. User then inserts the vulnerable cartridge, starts, and loads the savegame for fun and profit.) It is far fetched, but I could see it happening.

The utility of the cartridge slot is pretty limited though. The USB port is totally where it's at on this thing if you are looking for piracy. I am mostly interested in playing modified titles, rather than pirated titles. (Skyrim + mods in my pocket bro, can you dig it?) From a technical standpoint, there is no effective difference, but from a philosophical standpoint they are black and white. To achieve my objective I need a dumper and loader, same as a pirate. The existence of the tools is not the sin, it is how you use them.

Honest question: I’ve seen a bit of documentation for NAND dumping, but nothing specifically for digital download game dumps. Is this something that a.) exists currently, b.) is being worked on on secret or c.) is a nonissue? Wondering because I’d like to dump my collection at some point.

This is one of the things that should become possible with modified trustzone in Atmosphere; It will give users access to the crypto functions needed to decrypt/encrypt the title IDs, allowing easy API access to the title registry, and thus allow dumping/restoration of title data.

The stated intend for adding this functionality is to enable installation of homebrew titles, rather than installation of pirate titles. However, the tool can be used in ways other than intended. This is usually how piracy gets its foot in the door. See also how TeamTweezers did not like piracy being done through Homebrew channel.

Who is actually working on a backup launcher? The backup launcher will be available on the App Store in the HBmenu?

Someone who cares, it will probably be silent work. Ofcourse it's not the reswitched boys. And also someone who needs to figure out the exact in and outs on the Atmosphere CFW.

Thanks! But then probably it will be available directly via App Store in the HBmenu as the other emulators and stuff?

No Doubt someone will drop it for Creds . I would not say it would take any longer than 24-48 hours after Sciresm drops Atmosphere, and then the rape will begin .

But we already can install Atmosphere on 5.0.2 or I am wrong? With the RCM mode

Atmosphere is not ready.
Hekate has a WIP that uses some of the work done on Atmosphere, that can be booted on 5.xxx firmwares. They are not the same thing.

Yes, is not a full CFW but still we can load homebrews and that’s already cool. I’m waiting for Retroarch and the backup loader.

Eventually even if Atmosphere will not support backup loading, a loader will be released or someone will fork Atmosphere and enable that feature.

TX's SX method of loading the backups is interesting indeed, it emulates a cartridge instead of allowing installation of the game package. Probably a safer method to get off the big N's radar.

They're not taking any steps to not enable piracy. They just simply are not making a backup launcher at launch. Atmosphere will be fully capable of running backups when its done, someone else just has to do that part.

what? the absolute biggest game is 29GB and thats dragon quest heroes 1/2, just dance with all its music is around 13gb as is xenoblade. a good number of games are under 4gb with the vast majority under 10gb each. a 128GB sdcard would in theory hold 8-15 games depending on games and sizes of them.

edit: according to nswdb out of 109 dumps out there only 23 are above 8gb the rest are 8gb or lower

BotW is 13gb.
Skyrim is 14.3

This seems to be about the norm, yes. We can average it out, and say typical AAA title is ~20gb. That does not include any overhead though. If th SDCard is formatted as Fat32, it suffers the 4gb file size limit, which might cause problems. (Skryim's BSA being a big one...) IF there are lots of small files, then you suffer the slack space problem. (32kb allocated for a 1kb file, lots and lots of times.)

I pad the numbers to deal with such obstacles.

i edited my post to post findings from nswdb, 23 out of 109 scene dumps are over 8gb. 20 are 8gb that leaves 76 at under 4GB

But this backup loader could be released before the final release of Atmosphere, or we must wait?
