Hacking What is the best way to use a red Gateway card in Old 3DS in 2018?

Hi,

I just bought an old 3DS XL in firmware 9.2.0-20E and a red and blue gateway cards.

In an old 3DS I had in version 4.x, I managed to install the Gateway exploit under the profile settings by using the blue card. However that method doesn't seem to work with my 3DS XL v9.2 as when I try to execute the same I just get a black screen with a Loading... message and hangs in there.

I've then been reading the guide GW-v3-7-1.pdf about installing the exploit in newer firmware and I've been trying to install the browserhax by going to http://yls8.mtheall.com/3dsbrowserhax_auto.php , however I'm stuck in that step as I've tried for over 4 hours now (deleting cookies, history, restarting, etc) and it doesn't seem to work. I downloaded the browserhax_hblauncher_payload.bin file for my version manually and put it on the root of my 3DS SD card, but that didn't seem to change anything. Basically, when I hit that URL I just get an error and exit the browser.

Is there any other alternative to be able to install Gateway in such a way that I could use it without an internet connection later on?

Many thanks.

You can set up gateway to load through a9lh - set it as one of the options to boot with a button press.

Don't remember the exact verbage here because I have been out of the scene too long.

Honestly though, since you need to install a9lh to run gateway in the first place - it's easier just to install games as .cias

Let's party like it's 2015.
Well that doesn't rhyme :P

tl;dr - Gateway card is obsolete and its team has abandoned it.

Just go to https://3ds.hacks.guide to get up-to-date, free, permanent cfw that's better than Gateway ever was.
(you can still use the blue card for DS games at least).

Thanks I'll bookmark the link as it seems there's a lot of information there and I've never heard about all those new tools.

I just knew how to use Gateway and by following their manuals they were supporting firmware 9.2 as well. If there's an easy workaround to have it working, I'd prefer to do that as it's almost done. I can load it with WiFi at present, but I cannot install it under the Profile settings like I had done in the past.

I need to go to sleep now as it's so late here and I've spent so many hours with this. I think learning the new methods would take me even a few days/weeks more... :S

You setup a free cfw and put the cart aside for a proper retirement. The Gateway team long abandoned that cart for Stargate...which they abandoned shortly after launch and after only one update, which was the launch/only update.
Long story short, ditch the cart and follow The Guide to a better setup

Nah, try just an afternoon. If you decide to go with Gateway, you're going to have a bad time getting games and even the system itself to work properly -- and that aggravation will persist for days and weeks. With free cfw (boot9strap + luma3ds) you can update to the latest firm and not worry about trouble. You can even install games directly to your system from wifi.

I was trying to follow the guide before going to sleep, but I reach the end and it's quite long so I'll leave it for another day: https://3ds.hacks.guide/finalizing-setup

However, now that I reach there... does it mean Luma3DS just supports CIA files? Because all the files I've got are in 3DS format :S, plus I don't know where the CIA files will get installed. My internal SD card is just 2GB...

If you're retiring your gateway, you can always use that SD (with adapter if need-be). But yes, drop 20 bucks on a 64GB card if you must. it's worth it. (don't know the prices where you live, though)

And does it mean I need to somehow convert all my 3DS roms to CIA as well?
You can do that or redownload the games via freeShop or other means of downloading CIA games.
Regardless you won't have .3DS ROM support with CFWs and you will have to install your games directly to the system instead. I know this sounds like a bad deal, but it's worth it in the end when you no longer have to deal with a dead product.

In the last step: https://3ds.hacks.guide/finalizing-setup

Do you guys know what is the purpose of these sections? Are they required for anything?
Section V - DSP Dump
Section VI - CTRNAND Luma3DS
DSP is used for music in apps like freeShop
Copying Luma3DS to the CTRNAND allows you to start your system without the SD card as the boot.firm will be stored in the CTRNAND instead of the SD card.
They aren't really necessary, but they are common practice nowadays.

The first one is so sound will work in homebrew, the second is so your system will still boot without an SD card (moves the launching file from SD to system memory).

Thank you both. I'll see how it works before moving things to the system memory... I have done a lot of steps which I don't really know what they are doing!. Cheers

Just follow the steps in the guide, you can't screw it up unless you're actively trying to. (If you make a mistake you can just try it again, it won't hurt anything). If you don't do what's in the guide, and you have problems later, it is going to be hard to help you because no one will guess that they are related to you not finishing the guide.

hmmm... I managed to install the 1st CIA, 400MB of file took like 5mins or so.

Taking into account that a lot of games were 4GB... not sure if that would take almost 1h of installation per game? Personally, I prefer the Gateway method, where a .3ds could just be read directly without installing...

Consider this - you don't need 100 games right off the bat. Just download a game when you want a new game.

One more thing. I was now trying to launch Gateway like before (via WiFi) and now that doesn't work :(, it gets stuck in a black screen with 'Gateway 3DS loading...'

Do you know of a guide to uninstall everything I did following the guide https://3ds.hacks.guide and remove all the things that got installed? it seems there's a conflict with whatever has been installed and what I had before for gateway

gateway doesnt work on newer firmwares
and you will not be able to play newer games with gateway on lower firmwares

long process of downgrading etc.
or using a frankenfirmware for gateway if you search for gateway 11.6 guides
