Hate to make this thread but I couldn't find one that specifically addressed my issue.

I followed guides all around this site to set up my wii to play Virtual Console games as well as WiiWare games. After much trail and error I was able to play all the games I wanted to flawlessly, everything is setup perfectly. I have been keeping my nands and sneek folders on an external hard drive. Those folders take up around 13gb of space on my 500gb external hard drive. Obviously it felt like a waste to devote an entire hard drive to just 13 gigs of storage so I copied those folders onto a 16gb Sandisk Cruzer Glide. I looked it up and apparently this model of flash drive is compatible with USB Loader GX.

I plugged it into the correct usb port and booted up the loader. Everything worked well and I didn't get stuck on the loading screen as many others do. The app loaded up all my games and even showed the play counts, which seemed like a sure sign that it had worked. I click on the desired game to play, and it goes to the next screen showing me the games title and options for settings or start. Once I enter this screen I am locked into it. If I press "Start" I'll hear the click noise but the screen won't change, the same thing happens if I press "Settings" or the arrows on the side. The only way to exit this screen is to hold the power button on my wii and reset the system.

I formatted the flash drive to be fat32 and MBT the same way I have my external drive formatted. I tried booting up a couple different games, but the same thing happened each time. I switched back to my external hard-drive and it works perfectly. I'm really confused and don't know what to do since I couldn't find anyone else with this problem.

Flash drives are barely working with cIOS.
it might work inside the loader's interface because you probably set the loader's IOS to 58 instead of 249 or 250, but once you launch a game and it reloads to cIOS your device is losing visibility.

"apparently this model is working", you need to check the PID/VID of your device. the brand and model name is not always enough to know if it's compatible.
Sometime manufacturer are making hardware changes and keep the same product name.
And maybe they did change the USB interface software but it's using the same PID/VID than previously working device, so it's also confusing.

now, most flash drives are not working with homebrew.

Attention, using flash drive could corrupt your device/partition, so always keep a backup of all your folder and games on your HDD.
as flash drives have issues in write mode (read is fine, write is not), it could crash while attempting to write a save file (wiiware, or nintendont memory card creation) and break your file allocation table, losing all your files.
I really don't recommend flash if you care about your data or don't have any backup.

Many thanks! I have decided to forget about having a flash drive or external hard drive and just go for the SD card route. Am I correct in thinking that the only change I would have to make is rebuilding neek files to work on SD instead of USB? I'd just replace the neek files already on my external and then copy everything from my external on to the root of SD card correct? Then just change up paths accordingly on USBLoaderGX.

yes, you just need to rebuild neek's kernel file (for sneek folder), and move the NAND folder to SD.

If it's only for neek, or simple emuNAND in USBGX settings (using Full instead of neek) then SD is fine.
Only Wii disc based games are not working on SD with this loader, but Wiiflow and CFG Loader are.

Sometime, Flash stick are not working, but USB adapter to MicroSD are working fine.
That's not the best, but it's better than wasting a big HDD space.
USB adapters might heat a lot, so it's maybe not a good idea for prolonged use? I don't know.

if yo uare willing to use SD, I guess the front SD port is better.

Ok great news! I'll just replace everything in the neek folder to be on the safe side instead of just the kernel.
And yea I only use it for WiiWare and Virtual Console games, so I basically just always have it running in Neek mode.

Thanks Cyan!

so I rebuilt my kernel file and swapped everything on to my SD card. I loaded up USBLoaderGX and none of my games showed up. I setup my Nand Emu and Nand Emu Channel paths to sd:/nands/usbloader <-- the name of emunand. All my games show up on usbloader gx now but now when I click on a game it just takes me to a black screen and is stuck on it. Am I missing some other settings or paths that I have to setup? I'm a little lost and upset because I feel like I'm so close to getting it to work.

fixed the problem. I rebuilt my kernel a second time but didn't include di+ and it worked. Not sure if that was actually the problem or not but I read that some people were complaining about di not working.

glad you found the problem.
you don't need di if you don't play wii game disc from neek's disc channel. it emulates the disc interface.
maybe it doesn't work if you don't have a /wbfs/ folder? you might have it on USB but not on SD?
