The recently announced additional content to Sonic Mania will be launching later this summer, in July. A new trailer gives us a look at some of the new additions and features the update will bring, such as a 4 player competitive versus mode, stages taking place at a different time and looking a little visually different, and the abilities of new characters Mighty and Ray. For those that already own Sonic Mania's base game, you can update to the Plus content at a cost of $4.99 with the "Encore" DLC pack. Sonic Mania Plus will release for all previously established platforms, for $29.99 on Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC, on July 17, 2018.

It's an officially licensed Sega published game.
The developers, Christian Whitehead and Headcannon, are developers whose origins come from the Sonic hacking/fangame community (The Taxman/Stealth)

Because it is not a fan game. It is purely an OFFICIAL sonic game, developed by sonic fans who approached SEGA with an idea.

Those Encode Mode color palettes look sexy af. I can't wait to see how they toyed with the level design.

I'd get it if it had a Sprite change option for Sonic and Knuckles to their Sonic 3 styles.

If you have the PC Version, search for "Sonic 3Master". It's a mod that redesign all of Sonic's S3&K sprites in the style of Mania, color palette and extra animation frames included. It's really well-made, and is basically what I use by default when playing the game these days.

Wonder if we'll be able to choose who our partner player is. Obviously you can already play as Sonic and Tails or any one of the 3 available with Knuckles. Would be neat if they went all out and let us choose the combo of characters we use Sonic Advance 3 style even if some character combos offer nothing for the second player to help with (as opposed to Tails who can lift you up and fly you around briefly).

This is a feature in a lot of ROM. Hacks and fangames. Seeing Mania's origins, it'd be really cool to see it done in this Plus update.

I was aware of a mod called Sonic 3XP, which does basically the same (along with music and sound changes), but I'll give Sonic 3Master a look!

Now to clear up a specific misunderstanding which has been spoken about ever since the trailer's launch:
When it mentioned "New Zones", there was actually a double meaning behind it:
1. Same stuff which is already in Mania, but was mentioned anyway to promote the physical release.
2. Actual new zones in the Encore DLC Pack + Revamped zones, which as you saw, designed with new color palettes!
