Hi,

I'm wondering if a console that is modchipped should be booting or at least showing up an error on video if it has no Hard Drive connected?

I have a 1.4 Xbox that I didn't use for more than 10 years. Because the Hard Drive went missing I've decided to install an XBit 1.5 that I had bought but never installed perhaps 10 years ago as well.

I was able to find an archive of the chip's flashing software, and successfully ran it with Wine to write the bios. I've soldered the chip, verified the D0 connection. The switch from the modchip is setup to load the bios from where I've installed it. Everything seems to be in order.

When the console is powered on, the modchip lights green but it FRAGs red and green while without the modchip the video works and display the System Error message because of the missing Hard Drive.

In my memory, the EvoX bios is supposed to display a modified Xbox logo, but should this happen even if there is no Hard Drive?

the modchip is just a second bios chip, you need to install a (new) HDD and boot from the HeXEn disc to install the OS. If the HeXEn disc doesn’t boot you may have a bad connected, empty or broken modchip.
Not every BIOS contains the Xecuter logo or custom error codes, it’s different between the bios versions

But if it's a second bios, that would mean that the Xbox would still display the System Error code when the modchip is connected? In my case the modchip causes the console to FRAG with no video output.

No video output means that the wrong bios file is flashed on your modchip or bad modchip install, the video error code is flashing orange green

Edit:
I had 2 modchips with the wrong bios file flashed, when I turned the Xbox on the Xbox turned off twice then flashing lights with no video output so I think it will be the wrong bios file

Perhaps my modchip is dead. I ran the tool to verify the data integrity and it passed. Switches look OK, I checked the official XBit's manual from an archive of the defunct site and I think I'm doing everything right. :(

But you know that a bios for 1.3 won’t work 1.0, 1.1, 1.2, 1.4 and 1.5 Xbox
A 1.5 bios won’t work on a 1.0 - 1.4 and so on.

Please check which Xbox revision you have and try to flash an other bios file that matches with your Xbox.

I've tried several, but most of them are said to be working on models up to 1.5.

The Evox M7 BIOS is what I used.
