Homebrew Updating Cias?

I got luma 3ds and installed a couple of legit backups. It doesn't let me update them. I even enabled game patching by holding select when booting

Are they out of region? Also you can talk about piracy as long as you don't ask how to do it.

To update games from home menu or eShop they need to be in region and you need to be on the latest firmware.
Otherwise you can use FreeShop.

Enable auto-update title keys from URL in the FreeShop settings and press the QR code button below it.
Scan the QR code from the title key site (QR code button below "Download encTitleKeys")
Restart FreeShop and you're good to go.
You can download updates and DLC from the tab in FreeShop that lists your installed games, there will be buttons next to each game to download the DLC (if you don't already have DLC downloaded that is, since it won't detect if the DLC is out of date or incomplete) and update.
