I've been thinking a lot about it lately and have been wondering if this expectation of awesome CFW on 4.1/5.0 is actually worth the wait. I'm a Nintendo fan and as much as I love playing the classics (that I have legally purchased) which are now considered ROMs; I'm just not sure that it's worth the wait. I've been debating for awhile now and was wondering if anyone had any personal pros and cons of waiting. I get the generic pros and cons but I'm looking for personal insight. Thoughts?

Won't any personal insights just be a restating of the generic pros and cons, but with different people finding different pros or cons more or less important?
You're specifically reaching out to those who have not got two systems, and they probably decided to wait because they have other things to do while waiting (like games on PS4, XB1, or just in general are apathetic/dislike/hate Nintendo and/or the games that Nintendo is releasing this year) That's pretty much it.

It’s honestly personal preference.

I updated. As much as I love the idea of CFW, my Switch is my daily driver and I use it every day. I also need mine for reviews. I have no interest in piracy, and my Vita has me covered for my handheld homebrew. I simply really like CFW, but once it became clear that 4.x support wouldn’t be coming for a long while anyway, I decided to just skip it.

More broadly, I think it will be difficult to establish active scenes with the current 0-day exploit policy. The devs are of course perfectly entitled to do what they want. But it’s notable that the 3DS, Vita, Wii U etc. scenes only really took off once we got exploit for current firmwares. The PS4 scene is plodding along but there was years of inactivity, and the iOS scene is arguably dying out for the same reason.

I’m keeping my PS4 on 5.01 because I never use it anyway, but the Switch? I’ll stick with my Vita until we get a solution that doesn’t require keeping our consoles unupdated for half a year.

Unless you got your Switch for emulators and don't mind waiting for another year without enjoying the new games and online features, then update it.
personally, i updated mine because i didn't pay 300$ to play on emulators which they are already on my Phone/PC/Wii/WiiU/PS3, this is silly.

Most people don't want Homebrew, they want to pirate games, switch might also get some cool Homebrew tho, like steam game streaming, maybe.
What cool homebrew that could be on switch that wasn't already possible on wii u? Hardly any homebrew stand out on wii u, there is more wii homebrew though, and I'm not talking emulators, I mean like homebrew games. A joycon is basically a enhanced wii mote and touch screen is basically a wii u game pad without stylus. Basically you are right, people just want piracy and emulators on the switch, not really homebrew. :ninja:

If you have no choice and Switch is your only gaming console then personally I would update, get as much games as I could, and finish every single game I have to 100percent or at least finish the story and by the time I am done perhaps there's a lot of progress in the switch hacking scene and If i am lucky my Switch is capable then I guess that is it. If not, then am sure I already got enough funds by then to get preowned or even newer titles.

In the end, do what makes you happy. Don't let other people dictate your happiness. Sometimes we just softmod our consoles because it is what the cool kids do but are you really enjoying it? Did you get to enjoy your games? Or will you just be spending more time modding than playing? Choose which you prefer.

It will take time to be stable, and another few months loaders and such.
believe me i will be very happy for CFW on the Switch but on the latest FW, i won't sacrifice the new games and online for that.

As much as I love modding and tinkering, I'll probably update whenever the next first party title requires it.

I get that it's a tough decision though, no one wants to miss out on something cool that might be around the corner.

I really want Homebrew. But I also updated yesterday.

Why? Because I said to myself: there will be a solution for homebrew someday. Maybe in a half year or earlier. And at this time there will be a lot more Homebrew's or even a custom firmware.
Even when I get now a custom firmware - I am not a developer or coder. And I wanna play Mario Kart online, get my updates etc. load games from shop.
I really love Homebrew but I can wait and enjoy the games I have now.

I updated because the things I'm hoping for from homebrew are getting locked out left right and centre. There's no point since I enjoy playing the games too.
If exploits come for later firmwares, I'm not interested in emulators or the like. Not even on the Wii U was I interested in emulators.

I asked in the noob question thread but didn't get answer so a bit of highjack..

i have one 4.0.1 and one 4.1.0 switch right now, both new because i bought one for a present and happen to get another from a raffel. From what I understand, they are both the same in regards of receiving a hack, etc so it doesn't matter which one to keep for myself?

as far as i know, they're both the same. Keep which one you feel like keeping. And if you care about homebrew etc, don't update.

I don't need it for piracy. I need it for cheats! Don't get me wrong. I am an 30yo father of two kids. I love playing games but for the most games I don't have the "time" to farm, level etc.
So I would love to have infinite items in Zelda etc. so I can enjoy/rush the story of certain games. I don't need it for online game hacks - hate stuff like that. Only for my singleplayer / indie games.
Can only play 1-2h maximum a day and with that limited time I think zelda is definitly pain in the ass!

I don't need it for piracy either, or at least, piracy in the sense of playing or obtaining games i don't own, i already have the games i need.

I'm a father of 2 kids and i don't play with cheats, my playing time is limited to 1-2 hours too and that's not even everyday.
Yes it will take long time to finish any game, but it's better than killing the game experience using cheats, and i'm not in a hurry.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

I have a legit reason on why I don't update my FW.
I'm using a 3rd-party dock and I don't want to risk a brick.
What's wrong with 3rd party dock?
