PS1/2 Fat PS2 Not Reading Burned Games Properly

I have a fat ps2 and I have changed the laser to another one. It's better than it was but it doesn't seem to read the burned games properly. I'm going to guess it's the media (maxell). I took it apart and what seems to be happening is the laser moves into the inside of the disk and you can see it shaking like it can't read it and it starts clicking. If it gets past that part it usually seems fine reading the rest of the disc but every time the laser moves back to that spot it starts struggling again. Funny enough though it reads real games fine and even a toxic dl patched copy of 50 cent bulletproof on a verbatim dual layer. I actually have the real copy of the game here somewhere too.

The slim does read them but I'm going to guess it's the media and the older ps2 just struggles with the discs. If I had to play a game like San Andreas on one of them discs I'm gonna guess it would start struggling then even in the slim.

Should I just get verbatim or use an IDE hdd for it and what is the lowest recommended ohm setting for the laser without burning it out? Thanks.

Personally I'd go the HDD route, no changing of discs, coupled with faster load times make it a winner in my book.

Don't bother with the DVD drive, get an HDD adapter and a large HD and play the games from harddrive. It might be a little bit more "expensive" but the laser will only get worse.

PS: No need to get an IDE drive. There are SATA Adapters available for only a few bucks more than the IDE Adapters.

I got hold of an IDE adapter for not but it doesn't have ethernet for FTP. I'm just installing my retail games anyway but I will look into getting a SATA one. I had already ordered this one as it was really cheap.

Is it normal for the HDD to not spin until you either open OPL or HDLOADER? If I launch ulaunchelf it just hangs with the HDD making the sound like it's about to start spinning every few seconds. If I launch OPL first then exit and go to ulaunchelf it works normally. Should there be a file getting loaded on boot to make the HDD initialse?

I'll likely be getting a SATA one eventually but this will do for now until then.

I'm using the one that was included in the latest fcmb V1.9 package. It just hangs on loading HDD modules unless I make the HDD spin up first by using one of the loader programs.

been awhile sents ive heard rambling hear. now your question is that your new laser for your ps2 fat is working good on normal ps2 but burned ps2 discs wont work.
before i can decipher your problem i need to know if
a. your using a mod chip
b.freemcboot with ESR
c. joyriged setup for swap magic
d. both b and c
e. a,b, and c

Thanks I'll check that out and see what happens. At the minute I'm just installing all the games from the retail disc anyway until I can get an IDE converter. I can't even be bothered to build an old PC just for the one task.

ok for my recommendation is to make sure the disc by verifying it with pcsx2 because it can tell disc types. if it works then it should work fine in the ps2. but DVD+r work but only sertan brands work. DVD-r are the best option in my opinion. but if all that doesn't work you can always try the USB method and opl to me sometime can be confusing but it has the best compatibility with most games but if you want a more simple way there are some alternatives out there. if your going to use the USB method please note your going to make sure its a 1.0/2.0 compatible (i heard 3.0 is also backward compatible as well) and that the size is around 64gb. if you cant find 64gb drives find 2 32 instead. other then that thats all the knowledge i know. because you have freemcboot you can use ulaunchelf to put swapmagic DVD ver and have a joyrig type setup (make sure you have a REAL ps2 disc in first. because its a fat you can make a top loader mod (most recommended) or take the case off entirely(make sure you have a big fan to cool the system off because the case is off) i use the taking off the case entirely because i dont have my drill with me and i have to dig around the house to find it.

Can you install an esr patched burned game to the HDD since I have no PC with IDE and how exactly do you use popstarter for Ps1 games on the HDD. I keep trying to look it up and getting confused.

no not really but you can buy a USB to IDE adapter tho(i think)

I recently picked up a PS2 at a thrift store fore $15.00, planning only to use it to play through Drakan.
It was not till I got home till I realized that you could run all the games off of HDD instead the DVD drive.
What I did was modify an old IDE/Network adapter to use SATA, though after all was said and done, I realized how slow and unreliable that FTP was, so I ended up just writing all my games to the HDD directly under Windows using the "WinHIIP" software, which was MUCH faster anyhow.

That being said, save your self the trouble and just buy your self a Sata HDD adapter off Ebay. It does not have the Ethernet port, but you won't need it anyhow unless you plan on using that network port for multi-player some day.

Yeah unfortunately IDE is more or less obsolete now. I can get a SATA to IDE converter for €6 just for this one. My friend and my brother want HDD's in PS2 anyway so I can get myself a SATA one and sell one of them the IDE. This makes the original fat PS2 much better than the slim the fact that it can take the HDD.

I still need to work out popstarter for PS1 games but it probably won't be that hard once I start doing it. It looks like a good bit of text editing to make the games work and extra files and stuff.
