I've put over 200 hours cause of Merc Missions. Gotta love that artificial lengthening.
It's simply that long, nobody's required to complete all of the content unless they're putting that requirement on themselves. I've played a fuckton of Morrowind and Final Fantasy Tactics in my day, but I know I still haven't seen every square inch of either game.

The first 20 hours is horrible, graphics are ugly, no lip sync on the english dub, the menus are a mess to go through, and the vast majority of side quests (except for some of the blade quests) are mind numbingly tedious.

...But it's still my favorite game on Switch. Combat system is fantastic and I love how it evolves as you play more. The story is great and collecting blades is a lot of fun.

I highly disagree with that, it's a gorgeous game with unique setting(s). It's not 4K and high settings, but no console game is. Aesthetic is more important than highest polygon count.
It's the dynamic resolutions that make it look bad in handheld mode.

To be fair, the game isn't that good, you are right to say it. There is serious flaws but some people overlook them cause they find something more satisfying in the game than the dissatisfaction of the present flaws. Due no that the developers continue to support the game throughout the year not just with DLC but with more fixes to the game. Yes perhaps it was rushed but this isn't always bad. It is true that first impressions are good but having players sample things to leave feedback for devs to decide how to go about improvements is also a good process to handle a game. I would encourage you to keep trying but perhaps is just not the game for you. I wouldn't recommend the game in the current state, but perhaps few months later with the update improvements I could.

I come across my fair share of complaints and it has went through some controversy and criticism. Me personally I find it playable but could be improved. Finding ways to improve the game for the players is a good goal to aim for from developers which some do not even try to do leaving most players very cheated or felt like is wasted money and time. My opinion, i think you should keep it until a few updates come out and try it when they do to see if it changes your perspective for the game. I beat it in six days, I can't account for it being slow. I was determined to see the end of the game so maybe you need a drive to keep playing.

Xenoblade 2 was... okay. I didn't really care for any of the characters; I just didn't buy into their motivations. Tora and Poppy especially fell flat to me; we were supposed to take them seriously despite how dumb they sounded. I much preferred how they handled Heropon Riki in the original Xenoblade. He was an over-the-top character, and was rightfully kinda dismissed as such by other characters, though he had his moments of lucidity to show there was more to him than meets the eye.
Exploration would have been nice, but the constant skill checks really limit your ability to explore. And that you have to keep leaving the game to pick blades that will pass the skill checks? Ugh, really made exploration a chore. Also, I didn't like that fast-travel was a requirement to get around; it's probably just me nit-picking, but I almost never traveled back to an area I'd been to before because it just didn't make sense. You basically are breaking the world mechanics in order to go somewhere the story isn't currently pushing you towards because there is no natural way to get there.
The gatchaman mechanics certainly did not improve things. You know what's not fun? Spending an hour opening core crystals and getting generic blade after generic blade.
And the combat was decidedly unsatisfying. In the beginning you're limited in the number of blades you can have for some unknown reason. And even after you've opened everything up, the way battles are all about momentum and building up to strong attacks, it just doesn't work because either the enemy dies just before you've worked your way up to the powerful attack, or the enemy is too strong and kills you before you can build up to it. Now for some kinda spoilery stuff:
Continuing with the battle stuff, the final boss fight. I built a massive chain attack to wreck him with... and the game decided to just cut the chain short so it could introduce a cut scene where the characters are all struggling. Bitch, please! I was about to mop the floor with the boss and BAM! All the momentum I built was stolen away from me so that my characters could tell me I'm not doing well.
Now back to the characters that I didn't care for: The prepubescent awkwardness between Rex and Pyra was cringe-inducing for sure. Bad guys had not aspirations, just wanted to destroy the world because they were all emo. Named NPCs were rather forgettable.

Ultimately, the game's greatest sin is not being able to live up to the standard set by the original Xenoblade.

his is a huge JRPG which will take you 100+ hours to beat and 200+ for everything else
Can't really agree to that, I beaten the game (to the end credits) in 6 days and haven't gotten over 100 hours of gameplay, done most of the sidequest, mercenary missions also, reach level 100 and defeated most of the unique enemies (not sure how many exist but i fought a lot) Personally i think most players who play the game, expect to be able to instantly take on all side quest they come across just cause it is available.

Of course I understand that simply cause it would make sense that caues it is currently available that it should be possible, but this is why I feel that people don't really play the game the same way I do. I focus on finishing the game first, seeing the ending to the story, rather than messing around with random stuff I dunno what could be hindering my progress, if people actually focused on playing the main story quest to unlock more of the battle system, learn the gameplay as much as i can. But of course being a open world game that it is, encourages players to explore the game. To me is just a paradox but it does raise lots of questions.

There is plenty to the game, but it's probably dependant on how they choose to play that their style isn't designed for this game. Open world maps with huge areas to traverse, starting game encounter Level 80+ enemies in soon after starting chapter 2, lots of blocked off areas and things inaccessible without specific blade field skills. Yeah i know is not the greatest. It doesn't really encourage players to actually explore cause they can just end up disappointed knowing there is road blocks. But like i said, I focused more on the main quest not side quest. After I completed the main quest, the side quest was easily accessible to me, in games like these, the difficulty in playing isn't always the developers responsibility but the play style of the player playing the game. Is like the people who buy a game for example focus on everything else other than the main attraction of the game, Playing multiplayer mode rather than story mode first.

Also, I haven't played it, but this sounds similar to the criticisms Earthbound gets. I'm not giving an opinion, but maybe some one could chime in with the knowledge of Earthbound that could use this info to give some clarity or if it is similar?

I played earthbound once and beat it, after that I never wanted to again. I don't think it is a bad RPG game but it is one that probably was made by a team who just wanted to cash grab at the JRPG craze in japan at the time. To be fair, the game like most others of the type are marketed for Japanese audience, localization as afterthought. Now in days, RPG games are trying to be marketed for more players everywhere.

The game has some quirks to how it works. Having Jeff rely on using specific items rather than magic to fight, a teleportation skill requires you to run without hitting a wall like you playing sonic CD, some battles seem difficult even on max level (only other game I know like that is final fantasy 4 on psp) and odd ball stuff like waiting behind a water fall for 3 real life minutes. For what it is worth, it tried to add some oddities compared to common RPG but it left me a bit in wonder. Compared to xenoblade 2, i say there may be some similar things to point fingers at but is just kinda obvious. Neither game is highly likeable but to a handful of people.

Portable mode is just horrible. Even docked, textures are hideous except for in cutscenes. A little more polish would have gone a long way.

I have a friend that said xenoblade 2 was slow. I could not get where he was coming from cept for the beginning. When i play im constantly using blade arts, combos as well as specially. Now you want a jrpg thats slow try dragon quest 7. Took a little while for me to adjust to its slowness

I don't agree at all. In fact, I'm kinda meh @ the story so far, but really enjoying the gameplay and the world. In fact, I'm always hoping I can just keep doing side missions until I eventually have to progress with main story.
I kinda enjoyed Chronicles (never finished it though) but I kinda hated X, felt super generic and boring. Having a blast with this one though. 50 hours in now.

I'm in the minority. I bought the game thinking it was gonna be a huge improvement with the story and characters with the reviews but was disappointed with it and also overall has not much of a big improvement. Before anything I'll admit that I'm no graphics whore. I can play PS2 games without ease instead of using a PC to amp up the graphics but man, the texture of this game was painful to look at docked or not. And again, this is the only game on the Switch that I bought that does this to me. There were times where it looked good, but not most of the time. BOTW works for the cel shading and they've done a damn good job for it. Mario Odyssey does have small Anti-Aliasing problems but it still looks great. As for this game's characters and story, it seems abit more focuse unlike the first where the story seems kinda unbalanced. "Oh look he can wield the Monado and without him we're fluff expendables!" Reminds me of Krillin always looking for Goku for help. As for the gameplay it's unique and fun. I love it and I wish there were more JRPG that uses this battle Mechanic.
