Hacking So... Why is Linux on Switch exciting?

I'm sure it's progress of some sort but what exactly does it mean? Will it help with exploits? Homebrew? Custom Firmware? Sorry for the noobish question.

As a side question, are people usually this excited for hacking so soon after a console's release?
A couple of reasons.
1. Kodi
2. Android
3. In addition, having a fully functional Linux makes it easy to run virtually anything that's open source, without relying on someone having to port it to Switch first. Including stuff like emulators and web browsers, which a lot of people have been wanting.

If they make good drivers you will be able to run some PC older games.

Like on the PS4 they shown steam OS and some PC Linux games running on it, though since the switch is way less powerful only low end graphics\physics games would play good, though would still be awesome to run some indie Linux games + Nintendo switch games + emulators all portable in a all-in-one environment on a small portable device.
PS4 is basically a PC though, it's much harder to run PC games on ARM.
lunix plus virtualbox=windows....

switch hax -} lunix-} virtualbox -} windows -} steam????????????????????????
VirtualBox isn't an emulator, you'd need something like qemu (or DOSBox for older games) and it would be horribly slow to run a whole OS inside that.

Ah, I thought the announcement and "discussion" we're synonymous (i.e. I thought the discussion was the same as the announcement and this, didn't see the discussion) my apologies.
Nah, they usually find a user's thread that first reports it, then create an "official" post. In the official post, they will link to the user's thread as the "discussion" thread, without giving them credit for reporting it first (Perhaps assuming folks will understand credit is implied by linking to the post?). Sometimes they'll just create their own thread if they're not sure who reported it first (among...other reasons) and take all the credit :P 'tis how it's done at the temp to ensure main-page post look professional.

It's a fairly robust and well known/documented set of ways of interacting with the world of computers, one known to many outside of the few that would want to bother with a boring device like the switch (What has the switch really got? A better than most, for now anyway, computing power* and some middle of the road buttons by default. Whoo). It has various lists of software already made for it ranging from emulators to web browsers to file/media servers to media players to coding languages to all sorts of little applications that do things few homebrew coders are likely to care to port over, if it is the android flavour of Linux then it is fairly well monetised for those devs that want it (a lot do, see the end of the PSP and DS scenes).

*though likely not enough to push it to a higher level over more common devices. Your bog standard Scene videos will decode just fine on simpler devices (the 10 bit anime bellends can continue to hallucinate better end user quality elsewhere), emulator wise it is probably going to be "16 bit and older is just fine, something but still tricky on newer stuff" which is just like the PSP really, and it is not like it is enough power to go toe to toe with all the other system grinders of 3d modelling, serious video editing and CAD.

For the likes of the DS it represented the above but also a way for people to have a very small but network enabled device in their pocket. This was surprisingly hard to do at the time and thus we actually saw people use them in the real world for stuff like SSHing into servers when on sites. Today we already have phones and tablets with existing stuff so it is not such a draw, but if you can have it then absolutely do take/make it -- some seem to take the position that having another device renders such things pointless, I would argue it renders it essential if you want to compete.
Indeed I would hold that the Switch is unlikely to see a full bore homebrew scene like we saw on the GBA, DS, xbox, wii and PSP, case in point see the general meh that was the 3ds homebrew scene. To that end it has to be simple for those that know, has to have a low barrier to entry for those that don't and generally make things a bit easier. If someone has to learn say libnx (I assume libswitch has been taken already) and then implement a proper network handler then they are not going to find some cool new website with a nice API, put a basic wrapper around it and share it with the world (you know, like all those fun things on the DS that allowed you to have maps on your DS in mid 2007 https://gbatemp.net/threads/treasures-of-gaia-v0-2-released.58659/ ).

Easy, hardware control and multimedia.

Aslo... if you can execute linux on Switch, that not mean you can boot SteamOS or Linux based games, Switch is based con ARM, and Steam OS and the 99,9% of the Linux Steam Games are made for x86

I can agree with multimedia, but as the latter half of your post aims at.. You lose a lot of games... Not even just Switch. So, this is just for the tinkerers or the hardcore techies. Linux on the Switch has no real benefit for the average consumer. Of course the average consumer doesn't buy a console to modify the OS.

But you're still inputting in chronological order, so you can't even play it in real time
Negative frame rates would be really freaky though, as they would mean that things show up on the screen BEFORE you push the button.

It'd be like Hetrodyne noise-cancelling humming.

I'd rather the tinkeres work on making new hardware. Like an actual Switch competitor running Linux.

Sadly It's been proven multiple times that people don't care about Linux on phones or tables so any attempts that are not locked down Android die off pretty quickly.
