Nope - no water damage. And the colors are the same on a working n3ds, so I think it's just how it looks.

Edit - the color difference is from a reflection - it has a glossy plastic or something on it.

Ok - give me a minute :)

BTW - is there any way to just disable the touch input? But leave the bottom screen on?

Ok - disconnected it, now it turns on with only the top screen, but the issue remains :(
Take a look of this picture for the connector location :

If you have black screen on lower LCD screen, check lower LCD screen display connector.

In your case, hardmod can't change nothing, dumping NAND to reinject same NAND it's a wast of time.

I think it's a motherboard hardware default.

I'm 99% sure it's software - the buttons are working, just not when the system fully loads ;/

BTW. What about custom firmware? Is there any recommended?

I don't think there is a way to downgrade / install CFW without touch screen fonction because you need it to hack the console.

Hello man, I'm facing the same problem from today. First the past days I found that the controls were erratic they move by itself in diagonals even when I don't touch controls. And know I have the same problem as you. Restarted, no sound, no3D, no controls no touch, only Cpad and little L and R buttons working.

Can you tell me if you found the problem?

Unfortunately it's out of warranty, and the reply from nintendo was "most probably we will not be able to repair it with update service tools, and the replacement motherboard will cost 122 Eur" I can get a new n3ds for that price.
Did you looked in the Ribbon Socket for the Touchscreen ? There should be 6 Pins (I just have 5 xD I need to buy now a new Board iFixit 75€)

Hello, and excuse me to revive this old thread, but I have recently got a New 3DS with the same issue and I don't really know what to do in order to fix it.
I have already tried to clean the display and I have also changed the digitizer, hoping that was the problem.

Do you have any ideas?

I don't know but I learned from my faults and now this thing is laying here somewhere.... XD (disassembled)
You should throw it in the trash directly or give it to a profi ;)

If it is still under warranty, try to have Nintendo Fix it.

No, it's not under warranty. I have bought it as is at a very cheap price, though.
At the moment I don't have much free time to test it thoroughly, that is why I have asked here for a 'fast solution'.
Also, it's almost impossible to find any schematic/manual/info about the 3DS console.

First of all does your 3DS boot ?
Mine did somehow the first time I reassembled it but I didn't know I messed up with the gray ribbon responsible for the touch screen :/
You should check for any defects or broken pins/sockets on the board and then look further and replace that stuff that is broken ?
There won't be a fast solution (fixing a broken 3ds is a troublesome process and risky XD)

Yes the console boots up perfectly and screens are working. The problem is that both the touch input and buttons are not working. 3D is also disabled. Actually, ZL and ZR as well as the C-stick are working. When powered up audio is muted but if I close the console and open it again audio works.
Lastly, as OP and other people on the Internet stated, it is possible to boot into the system update menu by pressing a buttons combo during startup. However, the menu is unusable since touch screen still does not work. That's clear that buttons are working and the problem is something else.

Can you send a pic of your motherboard (showing the ribbon wires and all)? Oh and for some reason (my internet blocks pics from other website) if you don't upload the pic to GBATemp, I can't see it. It just shows

First of all, thank you both for your help.

Right now the mainboard is fully disassembled because I wanted to check all the resistors and continuity of the touch input traces.
I can assure the board is in good conditions. Ribbon cables are all intact. If I have some spare time to reassemble the unit I will take a picture of it.

Using the oscilloscope I found out that only X coordinate is being tracked, while the Y coordinate is not. I think it may be a hardware issue, probably related to the touch controller.
If someone has the same issue or has more information about the board and components, please pm me or reply to this thread. Thank you
