What can I do with a hacked ps3?
With a PS3 capable of 3.55 downgrade for CFW, backups, homebrew, media players.

With a non-compatible 3.55 PS3, most likely just homebrew and the possibility of loading backups.
Is there a credible source for this btw?
The devs have stated with the initial announcement of this exploit that writing to flash is possible, which would allow software downgrades.

Play homebrew games, regulate fan activity and playing PS1, PS2, PS3 and PSP backups
The ps3 homebrew page seems empty compared to 3ds. Is there anything you can point me to so I can download this stuff.

http://www.psdevwiki.com/ps3/SKU_Models < Check your model vs this page. If it's compatible with 3.55, you can downgrade. If not, no dice.

https://store.brewology.com/homebrew.php?lang= < Most homebrew projects can be found here.

EDIT: If your model number is a 25xx, but you don't know which one, you can also follow this to check the minimum firmware as well: https://gbatemp.net/threads/how-to-check-minimum-firmware-version.318773/

Thanks. My system says 2.70.

Is there any tutorials to install CFW?
I heard that Sony can block online with CFW.

Once the console is on 3.55, all you have to do is download the latest CFW release (like Rebug) which will come as a PS3updat.pup, put it on a USB, and install it via the normal system update setting, choosing the USB option when prompted.

And yes, Sony can ban your account from using PSN while on CFW, there are various spoofing methods to avoid it but IMO you should never go online unless you're fully willing to risk a ban.

Thanks a lot. This is actually really exciting. Can't wait to play ps2 and ps1 back ups as I don't own a ps2 anymore, and my ps1 doesn't work.
Also psp backups? The battery on my psp died so its not useable right now.

PSP backups will run, but note that it's not great compatibility wise as the PSP emulator on the PS3 isn't all that fully featured.

You don't need to go down to 3.55
You can patch for 4.**nofsm and directly install the latest cfw bypassing the need to go to 3.55 then dehashing then installing the latest cfw
It's the same with the software downgrader when it's released

For ps2 backups you turn on Cobra in Rebug tool box and install sman then backup your games to internal hdd
Sman will now load and play them

Im looking at tutorials right now and it seems ps2 only loads on internal hdd. Is there a way for me load them of a powered external hdd.
My internal memory is already full.

No
Cobra is turning on the ps2 emu software that is in every console left there by Sony but Sony left the limitation that it will only load downloaded ps2 games
So no external hdd's or USB sticks or network drives

As a work around can I transfer ps3 games to external to free up space. Can ps3 games load off of external or is that too only internal.

Ps3 games will work just fine on external hdd
If your leaving them as folder format then you need the hdd formatted as fat32
If your converting them to iso then ntfs formatted drive is needed (fat34 has 4gb single file limit. Iso game is digger than thus)
To make this easy use irisman
It will convert to iso if you wish and will write to ntfs where Multiman won't
