If you are running a SuperSlim then I would wait until you can see what you can do with this hack instead of preparing for it. Also, yes this is complicated, that's half the fun when it comes to console hacking and homebrew. If you're just looking to play with Minecraft mods, just buy a half decent PC and do that. Not only will it work better but there's much more support. Console hacking isn't for people who give up easily or complain on forums and ask questions tons of times that have already been answered. Do some Googling, it will be a much better and faster way of learning what it is you're getting at. Sorry if any of this came off as rude, just figured I would offer the best view I could on the situation.
Minecraft mods was just an example, I probably would use Forza hacks or something.
I don't have a super slim; I have an OG model. So, you load hacks from USB.
What kind of apps are available? Are there many different apps to do many different cool things like Nintendo homebrew, or is the only point of installing CFW to pirate games...ahem..."backups"?

So, do we know what this exploit's gonna do? is going to allow for full cfw or is it going to be the equivalent of a userland homebrew hack? do we know what models this is going to work on?

I don't know why but, after so many years, I've taken again a look to PS3 modding scene for seeing if finally we can install a CFW above the 3.55 OFW. Finally it's seems that this "dream" will be possible, so now I want to buy a PS3. I searched on ebay to see what I could take for less then 50€ and I've found a PS3 Slim (CECH-2004B) on OFW 4.66 with a broken Blue-Ray reader. In these days I've read that it's harder to make a CFW for Superslims 3xxxx-4xxxx, so I preferred to choose a 2xxxx console that, if I want, I can also downgrade. Do you think is a good choice for be prepared for this CFW? Thanks :)

but now we got a 4.82 update going be out soon. WOO BOY....
Its already out and its best if you download both 4.81 and 4.82 ps3 update pbp files to your computer incase a way to downgrade 4.82 is found out by release time and sony releases a 4.83 firmware update.

With the first release the exploit would be able to write to flash, which would allow you to effectively downgrade your console without having to use a hardware dongle. This particular part is only useful for people who have PS3's with a minimum firmware of 3.55 or lower, as it's still required to be on 3.55 to install a full CFW. You can check which models have 3.55 or lower as a minimum firmware here: http://www.psdevwiki.com/ps3/SKU_Models

For PS3s that have a minimum firmware higher than 3.6+, then not much with just the initial exploit. The devs have stated that their next project, once the flash writer is released, will be to work on lv2. With lv2 access, one of the devs stated we'd have similar access as Taihen on the Vita, meaning we'd likely get homebrew to run, as well as the possibility of running "backups". This would apply to all 3k slims, and Superslim PS3s.

so, if I'm reading that chart correctly, almost all the ps3 fat models are cfw capable?

PS3 Slim 2104B - IDPS dumped!

If your system doesn't turn off after 5 minutes, restart the browser and load the page again.
In about 30 to 60 seconds it'll get the job done.
