Currently on A9LH 11.2 with luma and chain loading into gateway emunand on 11.2. Havent used the system in a little while, but i use luma for games i want to go online with and gateway emunand because i like to mess around with the cheat editor. Would like to stick around with gateway until cfw allows me to mess around with cheats in the same way.

Was looking to update to b9s following the guide and found https://gbatemp.net/threads/tutorial-using-luma3ds-gateway-on-b9s.431691/.

When it says "Requirements: SysNAND or EmuNAND on 11.2 or lower!" i'm assuming that the sysnand part only means if i'm crazy enough to use gateway on sysnand.

So my question is does it work to have b9s on 11.6 and gateway emunand on 11.2 with this method? If not there really is no need for me to change anything and for all those willing to answer my question thank you for your time.

Yes you can do that, just be very careful to not boot into Gateway mode without the SD in (difficult unless you move the files to the CTR-NAND or if your SD card fails in a very strategic way) or else your CFW will be wiped and you'll be left on 11.6 with no hax (you would need ntrboot to get going again, or DSiWare hax if you had another hacked console).

Just curious, but why can't you boot gateway without the sd card in? I mean I know you said it wipes hax, but do we know why?
Does this happen even if you have b9s installed to your ctr-nand, or if it's only installed on the sd card?

Like I can see it making sense if you only have b9s on your sd card, because gateway doesn't have the write protection that regular b9s/luma has. But can this still happen even with b9s on ctr-nand?

I actually did an experiment later after posting this and found that simply booting a firmware on sysNAND higher than 11.2 doesn't brick - only updating while in Gateway mode does. Gateway does not have firm protection, and updating while in Gateway mode sysNAND will overwrite the place in memory where B9S is stored.
When you say B9S on CTR-NAND you're thinking of Luma on CTR-NAND - B9S itself is in the firm partitions, and is independent of where Luma is booting from.

Ah firm protect, I forgot what it was called haha. Yeah that's the only problem I thought gateway posed was updating (not so serious now i suppose)
And yeah I mean luma sorry, the two are almost always grouped together so I get mixed up sometimes.

Thanks for clearing that up for me though :D

So if I find my old sysnand backups (I think I did them with gateway, so shouldn't be rednand), I can create an 11.6 emunand partition, then flash my older sysnand to it instead and run my gateway fine on there right? (my backups are somewhere between 9.x and 10.x, before and after a9lh and b9s)

I doubt I'd ever update anyway since I would have boot direct to b9s sysnand, and would know if I was in gw emunand. But I also have ntrhax ak2i so the threat is null right?

One thing that just occurred to me.... The sound on the 2600 sucked less back then the harsh sound we hear now is from infinitely better speakers we have now, back when the 2600 was new speakers produced a almost muffled sound, like CRTs made old graphics look slightly better.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I wonder if I could recommend that to some emulation devs that perhaps the sound could use some smoothing out to simulate those old TVs
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think a few of the early systems could benefit from that, at least up to the 8 bit generation, by the 16 bit generation I think TVs had gotten a lot better in almost every way

it says it only works for the original R4, R4i Gold (r4ids.cn), R4iDSN (r4idsn.com) and Acekard R.P.G.

    nvm it does support mine

Just give it a try, but honestly if you have a 3DS you can play DS games without a card just off the internal SD card
