Is it possible to modify Mario kart 8 on the wii u to include the changes made on the switch like breaking while drifting? Is it possible to back port the inklings?

It would be hard. first, you need to fix the bugs. (the only two I remember are 59fps and speed hopping.) then, use an emulator or something to locate and modify the correct offsets in a decompressed romfs file to fix the fps bug, and slightly modify how high you need to be off the ground before it removes friction. adding tracks should be much easier.

The most we could do would be port the battle stages from Deluxe to 8 but even then we would be limited to only one game mode and some antigravity sections might not work.

I won't say it's impossible. But given the huge amount of work required to do so I doubt it will happen.

Are you guys forgetting how the switch version has 2 item slots? Seems like it wouldn't be very easy to back port that

Backport? Not at all, that's borderline impossible.
However, I would like to see a hack that would be done to change/add the new characters and give the ability to hold 2 items (I went on a facebook rant when I saw this, as it should have been in the game since Day1).
This might be possible but it would be like ASM level coding (I realize it's probably not written in ASM)

Someone already put Bowser JR and the Splatoon 4 wheel bike into regular 8.
Yeah, I use the Bowser Jr. one sometimes (the Splatoon ATV the last time I checked it was unfinished though). And... That's all there is. There isn't much progress on the scene aside from some promising retro course ports.

Does this add to the character roster, or does it end up replacing characters? Also is it just a skin, or did they bring over the character stats with it too?

Bowser Jr. replaces Larry if I'm not wrong. And it just replace the model, voice clips and icons (the animations and stats are the same as Larry).
