I'm not sure if this is in the right section but whatever.

I have an old CRT-TV that i have been using all my life. I haven't upgrade to a newer TV because (1) they are too expensive for me (2) Less input lag for Super Smash Bros/Melee/Project M. As you may guess, it only supports AV input. However, I made a great console and gaming setup in my room, but the only console i can't hook up is my PSTV.

So what is the best way for me to convert HDMI to AV for this old TV?

In the past, i bought a converter but it didn't work that well. I was only able to get audio out of it.
Does anyone here use a special appliance to convert HDMI to AV?

Honestly, especially when on sale or refurbished. Newer TVs (1080p) are not expensive at all and I'd highly recommend one, although yeah I'd assume you need a converter.

I would like a new TV, but it's just not something i can afford right now being that all my money goes to School and Gas.
Plus, i like my TV. It fits my cabinet perfectly and i got a bunch of AV switchers hooked up to it. I never really had any intention of getting rid of it even if i did get a newer TV. The reason i ever considered getting one is so that i could hook up my PSTV. I never really had any other reason.

I know a converter exists i just would like to find a decent one for cheap.

PS TV on a CRT telly...
I assume it's not a late CRT which supports higher resolutions?

The PS TV and Vita don't display true 1080p or 720p for that matter so you won't have much trouble reading the text.
360/PS3 and beyond will give you difficulties reading text tho.

Anyway, I got an Akai 21 or 22 inch telly for under 100 quid.
Full HD LED.
They don't have to be that expensive ;p

You know, if you are being that stingy, you could just make your own since I'm fairly sure you already have the skills to do so, just match the pins and add a couple resistors to match the current so you don't fry anything:P

Not sure if you're joking or not, but you can't simply wire up an HDMI source to a composite display without any sort of conversion circuitry and expect it to work.

It can be done with a simple 4093 and 8051, which I assume anyone in the business has lying around...

You have an 8051 that can convert an HDMI "480p" video signal to composite video in real time?
Do you know what a 8051 is? It's a microprocessor, meaning you can PROGRAM it to do whatever you want it to. A program that does such a simple conversion isn't that hard you know. I made a DVI to AV composite one long ago and it took a 8051, a 4093 integrated circuit, 3 resistors, 2 capacitors, a diode and a crystal. Seriously, stop thinking about this like it's something hard, it's not.

An 8051 is an 8-bit microcontroller that barely hit 12 MHz in discrete packages. A "480p" signal requires a dot clock of 25.2 MHz; multiply by 30 for 8b/10b-encoded 24-bit color, and you have to process 25.2 MHz * 30-bit = 756 Mbps, or 94.5 MB/s.

You seem to misunderstand something, I didn't say it will be perfect and lossless, I just said that it's possible to make in general since all of those things needed are things anyone who bothers with such stuff has lying around. Also, it doesn't take as much as you think it does, 25.2 is SUGGESTED value, it can be done with weaker processing power if you simply cut some frames out, make a buffer function and tweak some things. If you want lossless conversion, just go with a stronger microprocessor and remake the code to match the model (still won't cost more than 1$).
