Nintendo are either really stupid or very smart

While revealing a new partnership with SD card maker SanDisk, Nintendo has also revealed that, moving forward, some Nintendo Switch games will require a MicroSD card in order to experience the full content of certain upcoming games.

In an announcement, Nintendo noted that "a microSD card will be needed for certain Nintendo Switch games that contain an especially large amount of content and require additional storage for players to enjoy the full experience." At least one upcoming release, NBA 2K18, will be such a game requiring a MicroSD card in the system, as evidenced by the game's updated box art.

1st NBA 2k18 how long till everyone else including nintendo start doing this?

Nintendo is making sure not to blindside players who purchase games that need extra storage, though. A representative for Nintendo of America confirmed that box art, like that for NBA above, will have notices of this memory card requirement on the front and back of packaging. And for those downloading on the eShop, there will be the standard information noting how large the game is is.

Nintendo also clarified that games requiring the additional space of a memory card will still allow those without a microSD card to play portions of those games.

they claim to be not blindsiding but we all know what's it's really about :P

Oh but it it gets worse:

If you purchase a physical version of a game that requires an additional microSD memory card, you will be able to play a portion of the game right out of the box (for example, specific levels or modes)," a representative for Nintendo of America told IGN.

WHAT?!!

"To enjoy the full game, downloading additional data is required. Depending on the storage requirements for each game, it may be necessary to purchase a microSD card to expand storage space. When purchasing a digital version of the game, it may also be necessary to purchase a microSD card depending on the game’s storage requirements and the storage available on the consumer’s Nintendo Switch console."

and lastly I definitely do not like the sound of this:

"Some Nintendo Switch games will require consumers to purchase an additional microSD memory card to play them. Our expanded storage solution offers flexibility for those who need it to play these games. People can choose exactly how much additional storage space they want to buy, depending on the number and type of games they play, and the amount of content they plan to download," Nintendo said about the process.

So soon we won't even be buying the full game anymore you will be forced to go online and download the other parts of the game? what the fuck has gaming turned into...i want the SNES era back

SARCE

Predictable, since some Vita games did this too I believe. At least they're not proprietary memory cards like the Vita though.
Of course, it's a shitty decision, but I don't see how else they'd do it, since the cartridges are already so expensive to make.

That already happens now in the industry. Pay full price for a game then later pay extra again for unnecessary DLC and other paywalls, which could be easily be available day 1 in the build they ship.

not if you want the games prices to stay at $60.

Typical DRM bullshit as usual. Always get you by the balls in some way or another.

Sadly, nothing is plug n play now and is ruined by the aforementioned.
this has nothing to do with drm, lol

Xbox One and PS4 are in a similar situation, if not worse than this. Sure, they don't require external storage, but you MUST install the whole game before you can play it, and while you wait, well you get to look at the menus at least.
Those two has a justified reason and you well know about it. You can't compare those two to the switch situation.

Cartridges on the other hand...

Do you have internet connection?

Do you have an SD card?

If you answered yes to both questions, I don't get why you are complaining.
Because cartridges were meant to be plug and play, not this kind of "download the rest of the game to enjoy my crap" bullshit. What if you are traveling and happen to buy a phisycal game but you see it requires internet to download the rest of it. What will you do? go to a mcdonals and download the rest with a shity public wifi hotspot? Or waiting for it to be downloaded on your hotel using its wifi? Oh, but you could be playing the full game without the need of internet if this werent a problem.

Ffs, this is a problem that shouldn't exist on the first place and yet there are people ok with it? really?

Guys look at it this way: cartridges can only hold certain amount of data but if they exceed the limit: no way of actually putting the whole game on one cartridge. That's where additional memory comes in, which in this case is Nintendo Switch one. You can either save to Switch or SDCard.

This allows for more possibility's and it might interest other developers to not question developing on Nintendo Switch and to actually do it since they can easily put whole game in parts and call it a day.

Really, and SDCards aren't that expensive now. The only expensive SDCard is 512GB one which costs more than Switch itself.

2K is just being really greedy. I doubt Nintendo would do this on their 1st party games.

SD cards are cheap because they use the lowest quality NAND chips. I would hope the NAND inside Switch games is at least MLC NAND.
