Hardware [Tutorial] Improve your Switch's Wi-Fi signal, and fix the NAT Type to "A".

Hello friends! I am sharing with you what worked for me, and I hope it works for you! You'll need access to your router's internal settings, as well as your Switch's Internet Settings. If you can access both of those things, then let's get started!



1.) Improve the quality of your Wireless Fidelity.
Download and install WIFI ANALYZER for Android in the Play Store, and open it up. Scan the 5GHz band. You'll likely see your Wi-Fi signal over-saturated by your neighbors around you, with many open channels in the middle like this:

Go into your router settings and change to one of the open middle channels.
Scan again with Wi-Fi Analyzer. You should now be the only hump by yourself, and that's what we want.
I changed mine to 5.5GHz, and nobody else in my neighborhood is using it:

2.) Open your NAT type to "A"
I run DD-WRT on my Asus router, so many of you might not be so lucky to have a powerful firmware, but if you do, follow along. On your Switch, open "System Settings", then "Internet Settings". Choose your connection, then choose "Change Settings". Change them to look something like this:



IP Address settings: Manual
IP Address: 192.168.001.110
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.000
Gateway: 192.168.001.001

DNS Settings
Primary DNS: 008.008.008.008
Secondary DNS: 008.008.004.004

Proxy settings: Off
MTU: 1500

Autoconnect: On



In your router Settings, you can either add your Switch's IP address you assigned to the DMZ (Demilitarized Zone), or follow Nintendo's own port forwarding instructions HERE.
Now just to recap, these settings work for me, and my Asus router with DD-WRT. You might have your DNS settings set to block updates, and that's okay, it might not make any difference. (I used the Google DNS here, and it works fine for me.) When you're all finished, reboot the router (for good measure) and then run a connection test on the Switch. Your NAT type should report back to you as type A, and you'll have fewer connection issues while playing online.

Type A NAT is possible with a decent UPnP inplementation. This also means that forwarding all the ports or putting it on the DMZ is overkill for the Switch.

Cause no one has 5.5GHZ, they all either have 2.4GHZ or 5GHZ

jayro overclocked it's router ;O; i bet he uses watercooling in his router

I overclocked my router too, then when I discovered it still doesn't reach the other side of the house, I underclocked it to reduce temperatures. Now it covers 3 rooms on the top floor and a second router (an old one I had laying around) covers the bottom floor.

By the way, look at the picture his wifi is on 5492 MHz on the 5 GHz Band...
Soo it's a measly 8 MHz off to be exactly 5.5 GHz, I'd call it rounding up....

It's been mentioned before, but forwarding every port like Nintendo suggests, or putting the Switch in DMZ is a bad idea. DMZ is slightly better, because it still lets you forward ports to other things on your network, but both are a pretty bad idea security-wise. You're opening yourself up to people port scanning and scanning your IP for exploits, and you better hope no other device uses the Switch's IP by accident and ends up in the DMZ, cause while the Switch may not be vulnerable to any of the exploits they're searching for, other devices may be, and it puts additional strain on your internet connection and your router.

Nah, it has the ability to be overclocked or underclocked since I run DD-WRT and the router was designed with open firmware in mind. I just never bothered, since it's a huge step forward from my old router, a Linksys WRT54GL. If people actually look at where my 5.5GHz hump is in relations to the arrow up top, it is directly on 5.5GHz. the setting in the router is also 5.5GHz.

I set static IP addresses purposely on all of my devices, so that's not an issue. I also use Ethernet on as many as I can, for speed, reliability, and security.

I've had a few disconnects with type B, but if it works for you, by all means keep with it. No sense in fixing what isn't broken, right?

Well maybe is not the nat type, all that does is limit who you can play with, not improve connections... unless is with people who have improved connections. Ever since I had wifi networks, I always had B type, never stopped me from anything. I probably should ask if Nat a really is worth it over secure security network. That guide you linked from nintendo says to open all ports from 1 to 65535. I tried but my router can't for some reason, i thought UPNP was good enough.

Got 60MBPS download and 25MBPS upload, thanks to switch having 5GHZ for once, so I'm glad and confident enough. Only I had a game to actually play online with to test it confidently.

I only have 4 games, Legend of Zelda Breath of the wild, Shovel Knight, Blaster Master Zero and Mighty Gunvolt burst.

I bought Zelda cause if I didn't I would have had a switch with nothing to play on launch day. I bought shovel knight Which I kinda regret paying $25 for cause I didn't know my wii u game would update to have the new characters like spectre knight and king knight. I got blaster master zero and Mighty gunvolt burst cause it was $10 each with free dlc, and I like Inti creates games.

I don't have any other games mostly cause of the price tag. I would buy some games like Ultra street fighter 2, maybe buy puyo puyo, cave story+, retro city rampage, and more. But I'll wait for discount.

I bought my friend's switch WITH Zelda for $300 flat, because he beat it and didn't buy anymore games. So I traded Zelda in for Splatoon 2, and Gamestop gave me a $40 credit for it because I'm a Pro membership, and I also had a "Get $10 added to your next trade" card on top of it. So that made the game only $20 USD

I get a Nat Type A by port range forwarding literally every port (1-65535). I have noticed 0 difference between A and B. But I prefer A just to be safe.

i rather change the router channels for 5.0ghz. i currently use channel36. 36, 40, 44 and 48. Should be the best ones.

The higher channels are better as the Transmit power is higher than the lower channels. This allows for more coverage unless your access point has issues with signal noise at higher power levels which would reduce signal integrity.

Not even on the Switch would I ever enable DMZ. Not to mention what's the difference between A and B? It's not like it fixes the terrible P2P connections.
