I hacked my O2DS using "The Guide" about a week ago. 11.4. Everything was working great until today.

The home menu started freezing after just a few seconds of navigation, and not all installed icons would display.

I suspected my SD card had become corrupt somehow, so I took it out and scanned it using h2testw as the guide suggests. I got no bad sectors.

Booting the 2DS without the SD would work, but the home menu would still freeze. So at this point I was able to rule out the SD card as an issue.

Next I thought about trying the recovery/safe mode I've heard so much about. So I'd boot holding L+R+A+up, but all that would do would boot me to a black screen. No menu, no nothing.

So thinking my extdata was somehow corrupt, I tried L+R+A+down to rebuild the home menu icons. That would take me to a screen that said "Preparing to start the home menu. Please wait, and do not turn off the power." but this message would not go away, even after 2+ hours. So that was no help.

I next powered off and booted up normally, but could only see the "Preparing to start..." message. No more home menu at all.

At this point I considered myself semi-bricked, so I went for the nuclear option. I used the guide to do a full NAND restore.

Now I can't boot at all. I get black screens whether or not my SD card is in the slot or not.

I can still
- boot to goodmode9
- boot to luma3ds config
- launch the Rosalina menu from the black screens

That's about it.

There's probably an easy fix for this since "there are no bricks" these days, but I'm pulling my hair out over here. Any ideas?

Ok. I'm at Section II, Step 16. After a reboot all I get are black screens. Home screen/system menu never shows up.
hm, doesn't seem to be a nand issue then...

dunno what else to suggest, though at least we've marked off one possibility

Do you atleast get recovery mode after the 9.2 ctrnand transfer?

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

You can also try making an emunand and see if you can boot to it

Well I couldn't complete that whole process, but up to the point where things went south I still wasn't able to boot to recovery. Just black screens when holding the recovery key combo on boot.

Honestly at this point I'm suspecting hardware failure. This is a refurb 2DS that I bought from Nintendo's eBay store two weeks ago, so I'm still within my 30 day return period. I may just send it back.

1.Copy all your contents of your SD card to your PC this is important
2. Open godmode9
3. Press the home button
4.select more
5. Select SD format options (or something named like that)
6. Choose min size
7. Accept cloning your sysnand to emunand
8. Once it has finished copy your SD backup back to your SD card while your 3ds is off
9. Power on 3ds and boot to luma config and select Autoboot emunand then press start
10. If you boot than emunand was successful and if not well not sure how else I can help

Have you tried the legacy Luma from https://astronautlevel2.github.io/Luma3DS/ ?

Thanks for all the help, but this system is toast. Emunand gives the same results and legacy Luma wasn't any help either.

I should have known when the NAND restore didn't help at all. It looks like the 'black screen of death' is not uncommon on 2DSs, even on those with OFW.

I'm calling it a hardware failure and returning it to Nintendo.

You can't return it cuz you hacked it

B9S will probably be remove and youll probably be updated to 11.4
Well the 2ds is broken so it's either a functional 11.4 console or a non functional b9s console and since it's hardware related there is nothing he can do
