Well personally as much as i don't like nintendo doing this, it's also within their legal rights to do this, when it comes to romhacks and other derivative works however, i'm not entirely sure because while you are using nintendo IPs and other such assets to make a derivative work, at the end of the day its still their property, the romhacker just reused it for their own stuff.

Based on the timing, a few months ago the NES classic was hacked and people were able to put 100s of games on it, which were available from some of those sites. The SNES classic is coming out soon as well, and I'm sure will eventually have the same fate. What you also have to understand has to do with Japanese business culture. Some of these things "come from the top" and people at the top can sometimes be out of touch with real world practicalities. Big reason for a lot of weird Nintendo decisions over the years IMO.

Lol @ people talking about "preservation".

You aren't preserving shit. You are just in the community to play free games. Do you want to prevent? Then only upload games that aren't on sale anymore. Hypocrites.
Another person that knows what they're talking about. You honestly think I give a shit about playing the terabyte or so of games I'm archiving? It has nothing to do with that. Data preservation is a hobby of mine, especially when it comes to things I'm passionate about. I also have a gigantic archive of malware. You think I'm interested in even using any of it? Fuck no. If it's rare and has the possibility of being removed from history then I want it preserved.

They are fucking up with the preservation of digital media and history as a whole for fuck's sake.

They have nothing to gain from preservation, you think they don't have everything they own backed up somewhere? History? pfft, they only care about if they can somehow make a few bucks in the future.

As a Romhacker myself,

As a romhacker yourself, they think you should be in jail or at least paying a hefty fine. Nintendo's always been like this. It's just lucky they weren't always super active about it.

The real problem is fucked up copyright laws that no longer allow things to fall into public domain. There's no real reason anything n64 or earlier should still be copyrighted. Thanks Disney...

i am at the same side as Joom here, life is short, people work a long time on things, I think the removal of games in their raw form is disgusting, may archive them

Ofcourse they don't gain anything from preservation, but at that same respect, we do, we gain memory. Archiving is something I cherish and I've always felt helps the community.

Nintendo can try everything they possibly to get rid of much roms as they possibly can. However, they will never be able to remove all sources of them. Ever. Who knows? It might need to become a deep web thing. That's the worse case scenario but..eh. Hell if I know.

It'll never reach TOR levels what with all the torrent indexes and public facing FTP servers out there. Like someone else said, when one goes down ten more pop up.

This is true, but it wouldnt hurt to have an archive. Perhaps i could set up a .onion link, but i dont have an expansive rom collection, if anyone wants to PM me about that please do.

i dont think itll reach that either, but a public archive on tor is not a bad idea.

The cool site doesn't host Ninty roms for the past two or three years or something. That ain't new. Still, it seems a paradise is still out there.
We know this, we're speaking of the recent removal of Big name roms, we also fear another cool site scenario for the paradise.
