aaaaaaaaand... it is broken, can't erase/move/format the sd card. well I guess I ll have to manage with what I have.
Thanks for the quick & promt reply as always!

Apologies for the standard noob question, I have spent several hours looking through the forums and watching awful youtube videos etc and haven't found anything definitive.

I softmoded my wii last year and because of other obligations its been gathering dust. Everything always worked fine. The external harddrive that I was booting my games off of was formatted with a pc at the same time as the original mods. At this point, I only have a mac running sierra. In order to get files onto the harddrive via my mac, I had to reformat it. Now it won't work.

Is there any way to actually get the external hard drive formatted properly to have wiiflow, usbloadergx, or gamma actually recognize the game files / the hard drive? I tried using a NTFS utility to format my harddrive but the wii still won't recognize it; I tried formatting it with usbloadergx and then my mac won't recognize it. The closest I have been able to come is formatting to FAT32 and then using wiijmanager. I can then get wiiflow to recognize the games exist, but it freezes after selecting them. When I try using usbloadergx or gamma with this format they freeze at the 'loading usb' screen. Am I just SOL without reformatting the HD on a PC and reloading my games library?

Easy, use VMWARE if you want some window on your mac, you can download windows 7 iso legally from microsft website, as for formatting the drive FAT32 would be your best choice, if you dont want to use windows, just get a fat32 format utility.

Other than that, a SysCheck would be very usefull to see if some of your cIOS are outdated.

thanks for the advice. I had debated trying to run a virtual environment. Syscheck I can just run off my sd card yes? I tried to run a ntfs utility to make my drive more "windows like" but that didn't seem to work. I'm a bit confused because when I use the fat32 format (which is an option by default in the version of osx I have in the disk manager) I still get the crashing problem. I'll run this system check utility you mentioned and report back.

Here you go, you need this files just as precaution, since it seems that the revision of the CIOS you got are different:
c757127b61df42f6a16e267d295e0259.png

Also, try to use USBLOADER GX or Open Wiiflow Mod with FAT32 partition, ;D

Yyou will most likely need windows for this, after that, download SetMiiUp "its here on this forum ;D" and use it on windows ;D

Havent ported it to Mac, sorry :C

rats.

so I just tried the fat32 partition thing again with usbloadergsx.

i formatted the drive again, which allegedly contains a single partition that is roughly 500gb, and is in the fat32 format. I then used wiijmanager v0.8 to copy/convert my ISO of new super mario bros into a folder titled WBFS. I then moved the external hard drive into the correct port, opened the homebrew channel, launched usbloadergx, and am hanging at the 'initialize usb device' screen. when i instead try to use wiiflow I get the launch screen (the little video and all) but once I try to start the game it again hangs. neogamma hangs when I select to mount the WBFS. I guess the one other relevant piece of info is the WD harddrive I use (which is the one I used to use as well) has a display light that moves when the drive is loading: when the wii hangs the hard drive also displays no activity. It basically flashes once and then the wii is basically ignoring it.

Maybe there just isn't a workaround sans a windows environment...

If you're using a Mac make sure the drive is MBR/FAT32 and not GPT. Mac OS likes to make everything GPT. It also likes to add hidden system partitions that interfere with backup loaders.
