So, I was reading the guide to update to B9S to make sure I go through the entire thing before I actually start anything on my N3DS itself, and I saw the parts where it mentioned to download GodMode9, I had no idea what GodMode9 was and Googled it.... and it was listed as a file manager. I figured the guide might need me to delete or copy or whatever some files on my 3DS itself during the process if they said I would need it.

But then as I continue I get to a part where it says I would need to delete all older payloads as they would not be compatible anymore, which would mean deleting Decrypt9WIP.

Since I use Decrypt9WIP a lot to backup my NAND and dump my carts to .CIA and .3DS versions, I checked to see if there was an update to a D9S version before deciding to convert, and was surprised to find a message saying people should switch to GodMode9 and that unless someone takes over the project this would be the last update to D9WIP.

So I wanted to ask how people felt about these two applications. If they preferred one or the other, and why? There were comparison threads before when I tried to Google them, but they were old, and far before B9S existed (Hell, many of them even had Hourglass9 in the mix). Most people seem to be more or less evenly split across the two in the older topics I saw, but I also saw a lot of confusion and complaints about GodMode9. Mainly, about how it seems to mainly be a file manager, and there seem to be a lot of "gotchas" that would screw up someone not familiar with it, such as how it does not auto-dump the encryption keys with the nand dump the way Decrypt9WIP does, and is apparently much more confusing to use. Others commented how they could not figure out how to dump/inject the H&S app as part of the 3DS hacking process, and other confusion.

As I said, pretty much all I use Decrypt9WIP for is to dump my carts to trimmed .3DS files for emulators, to trimmed and decrypted .CIA files to install on my 3DS itself, and to create NAND backups for safety.

What are your opinions on the two? Which do you prefer now after B9S is out?

At this point G9 pretty much does everything D9 does and more.

Even d0K3 suggest you move on from D9

Taken from D9's latest release:

You may have noticed the lack of love for Decrypt9WIP during the last few month. Reason is, you should really be using GodMode9 by now. I don't want to leave you sighaxed people left behind, though, so this release is for you.

Blurb from G9: https://github.com/d0k3/GodMode9

What you can do with GodMode9
With the possibilites GodMode9 provides, not everything may be obvious at first glance. In short, GodMode9 includes improved versions of basically everything that Decrypt9 has, and more. Any kind of dumps and injections are handled via standard copy operations and more specific operations are found inside the A button menu. The A button menu also works for batch operations when multiple files are selected.

GodMode9 easy, even before B9S came out. Another clincher was the title search thing. The mark of a great software is a feature you never thought of wanting, but it comes anyways and it's sweet. Plus with Plailect's guide having a section on GodMode9 usage, it is the premiere software from d0k3.

I was looking through GodMode9 usage, and it seems to be missing features I use regularly in Decrypt9WIP, unless the guide neglected to mention they exist.

Namely, being able to have more than one NAND backup by choosing a different filename, and being able to dump a cart to a .3DS file. (Plus it's not clear if the .CIA file it dumps is trimmed and decrypted or not).

.3DS files are padded. CIA files are not padded.

I use both. Didn't see any EmuNAND options in GM9. Also I find it quicker to some things in D9.

and being able to dump a cart to a .3DS file
insert a game card then find "[C:] GAMECART", where you can find two ".3ds" files (full/trim). select one and choose "Copy to 0:/gm9out" to dump the card.
(Plus it's not clear if the .CIA file it dumps is trimmed and decrypted or not).
CIAs are not "trimmed" like ".3ds" files are, since they don't contain padding data there is nothing to trim. result is decrypted, as usual.

you currently can't easily choose a name when dumping NAND, though you can rename it after. you can keep both tools if you like.

Imo gm9 isn't as noob friendly. In d9 it's fairly easy to find a certain tool by just making educated guesses to what menu it's in. But gm9 has many more options and they change depending on what screen your on.
It's not as easy to figure out first use without looking at documentation, even for simpler tasks like dumping nand. I can see a lot of people being annoyed because the dump/restore nand option isn't immediately visible like d9/Hg9

Agree, I liked it better when there was one little application for each task.

And someone should make a noob friendly userguide for GodMode9
- create Emunand on a fresh SD (yes i still like to use meunand)
- write emunand to sysnand / sysnand to emunand
- etc...

Decrypt9WIP and EmuNAND9 where straight forward, select option, done, it isn't always straight forward in GodMode9

The GodMode9 guide is sadly hidden on 3ds.guide and requires somebody to actually press the three-lines-icon on the right to see the rest of the links. Personally, that's why I never noticed it until I saw a link.

Also, as 'advanced' as GM9 is, I love the simplicity now with the bonus drives. Want to do a nand_min backup? Go to the drive, and copy it over to your sd card. Backup gbavc.sav? Copy and paste. It's all copy and paste and I love it. The non-intuitive part is knowing that GM9 knows what you can do with supported file types. So when in doubt, just highlight the file and press 'A'.

I know but, I'd like to see a more indepth guide :)

still it's missing some options.
I can only restore to sysnand, not to emunand
Decrpt9 was more straight forward and had a few more options for emunand users
It's not missing some options as much as they aren't there for a reason. If you search these forums you'll find links to Decrypt9WIP.firm that works with BS91.2. I think GM9 is even more straightforward than D9WIP, and without the need for a menu. It's all intuitive. Want to dump a gamecart? Go to the gamecart drive, highlight the game and press A. Want to dump a title to CIA? Go to the title, wherever you have it installed, and highlight, press A. Dump NAND? Either home menu (shortcut) or go to bonus drive and copy it over. Mainly, highlight whatever you want, press A, then select your options. At this point, there are few reasons to use emuNAND, none of which I personally consider valid.

Like you siad there are few reasons to use emunand, still there are people who updated to B9S 1.2 and still use emunand, who later on maybe want to switch there emunand to sysnand.
(I bet more and more emunand users will switch in the end)

So how to do? (this is in theory, so don't take me on it)

- Make an EmuNAND backup with GM9
- Go to \gm9out folder on your SD, select nand.bin and press A button
- NAND image options
- Restore SysNAND (safe)

In theory this should restore your EmuNAND backup to Sysnand and keeps your B9S intact?

Or do you need to do some preparation first to be sure B9S will still be there once you got rid of EmuNAND
For example:
- Do i first need to copy boot.firm to "EMUNAND CTRNAND" and Luma folder to "EMUNAND CTRNAND/rw" (Like we had to do to "SYSNAND CTRNAND)
- Then make an EmuNAND backup
- Then restore this NAND.bin to SysNAND

Anyway these are some things that need to be considered for a more indepth test with GM9

I don't want to use D9WIP either for that, cause i don't know if D9 supports keeping B9S/sighax when doing an emunand to sysnand restore

I just don't want to end with a sysnand 11.4 system with no B9S on it,
you gotta understand, i want to be 100% sure when doing an emunand (11.4) to sysnand transffer on a B9S v1.2 system, i don't end with a system with No B9S on it :)
(Yeah i know the guide said about doing a transffer now before proceeding, but it already had v1.0 and that was before the guide was updated with that part ;)

Anyway, D9WIP was more straight forwxard for noobs who didn't want to readup to much, but i can see it's getting outclassed by GM9
Once you readup on GM9 it has indeed more possibilitys and is mor elike a real file browser should be, press file and handle it, move/copy etc...
You could compare it to Total Commander on Windows PC's without the double windows ;)

Yes. I restored an older EmuNAND from a9lh days to B9S SysNAND.
