Hello all,

I have just picked up a crystal xbox and I'm going to be tsoping it (hoping it's not a 1.6v motherboard once I open it tomorrow).

Ultimately, I'm wanting to stick a 1TB or 2TB HDD inside, I have been looking for PATA to SATA adaptors and I'm hoping someone has some recommendations, and place where to buy within the UK.

Also, if you have any recommendations for custom dashboards, apps etc that would be great!

A Kingwin one is certain to work.
I only know eBay has them...

As for custom dashes, install UnleashX, homebrew... idk you can get onto Xbins.

You could also softmod and get the same results. I actually swapped out my HDD on my soft modded Xbox to a 40gb. Granted it's not much but at that time I didn't have the money to upgrade to a bigger IDE and sata's weren't any cheaper.

Also if you're going to be opening up your Xbox make sure you remove the clock capacitor as it's known to destroy motherboards. I'd also replace the "thermal paste" (goo? I think they all have goo) with something like Arctic Silver 5. If you do that though make sure you turn on the xbox for a while before removing the heat sink as that gunk creates a hellofa bond between the sink and cpu. I'd also recommend using a light amount of acetone on a qtip to remove it quickly but after doing so clean the area with another q tip and water/alcohol just to be safe.

Thanks for the reply both.

I will softmod, but with TSOP it basically emulates a mod chip and allows me to use the internal BIOS chip, use unlocked HDDs etc. - I will do both. It's only soldering two or 4 points anyway.

I will definitely be removing the clock capacitor, thanks for the reminder. & thermal paste will be replaced also.

You can also replace the noisy fan.

TSOP is recommended if you got a 1.0-1.5 xbox.
It basically making it brick proof (incase the HDD dies)

Note that 1.6 xboxes don't need their clock caps removed.

And it doesn't emulate a modchip you just replace the bios.

Yeah, that's basically what the mod chip does, doesn't it? - Allows you to use custom bios? TSOP is just using the internal bios chip instead of the bios chips on a mod chip?

You're just making the BIOS chip writable and writing a custom BIOS to it.
So yep, it allows you to use a custom BIOS.

Thought so thanks,

Do you know any tools I use which will assist in prepping my memory card for use on a Mac. I don't have access to my windows machines at the min, so Mac only unfortunately.

No the modding method USB,Hotswap,Modded memory card?

Oh, modded memory card. - I have a USB to memory card adaptor from my action replay kit, from years a go. I went out a bought splinter cell again today, cost 50p... Faster to buy another than look for my old one. I also found 4 games which were decent too. All were 50p.

I found my adaptor which had the memory still attached after nearly 10 years!

You need a XP vm for the action replay kit.

Yeah, I already have the windows 7 VM made. I just need to copy it over to my Mac and will load the software in XP emulation mode and see what happens. If it works, great; if not I'm installing XP... the VM is tiny for XP anyway only like 4GB
