Howdy all,

Not all of us were PC gamers since the 80's. Some of us are noobs. Some of us have been PC gaming since, maybe the GameCube days. I figure we should have a fun place to discuss our pet peeves and other things we wish PC game developers would take notice of.

I come from a very console heavy gaming background. Had it not been for a mixture of game streaming on OUYA, Steam Big Picture and my wife giving me the base parts that ended up being my gaming PC. I wouldn't be into PC gaming as much as I am. That said, while the transition has been mostly smooth, yet there are some nagging factors.

1) Really wish developers would take the time to properly place controller button icons in their games. Most console/PC ports handle this well but games that have more of a PC following tend to have a "f*ck it, we don't care!" feeling and it's really annoying! (I'm looking at you ARK!)

2) Separation of mouse and analog sticks! REALLY REALLY REALLY wish more current games would keep the separation in their games. I use a mobile VR Headset and Trinus VR software with my gaming PC and it really sucks when a game forces me to either invert aim for my right stick or keep mouse aim for my headset. Since head tracking on my headset is based on the gyro mouse on my head. I would really love to have the option to invert aim on my stick but keep normal aim on my gyro mouse.

3) Steam needs a updated web browser. Sure it works well with most sites but the lack of proper flash for some sites and the fact that Steam's background music sometimes still plays in the browser makes it all feel broken :/

Anyone else have thoughts they want to share?

DLC. that crap should not exist since most companies cut out parts of games and sell it as DLC. Like the Dead Rising 4 true ending >:[

With the 360 pad being adopted as the PC pad of choice it got kind of OK, now that has since gone away it seems to have come back. Hopefully Windows provides some kind of joypad-keyboard bridge a la joy2key, maybe keeping joypad API at the same time.

On VR then the whole mess is rather up in the air right now. Pending either someone coming along with an iron fist (preferably an open source one but it is 8am as I type this and I am not prepared to get drunk enough to believe that will happen at this time), or out and out outperforming the competition as well as working for the masses so as to set a standard then it is not going to happen.

3) Can't steam just do one instead? I hated the all in one concept when it was called AOL however many decades ago that way. Have a little sales platform, cloud save service, game downloader and forums on it if you want, beyond that you can keep your crappy DRM and its attendant lack of resale options.

Also can I be one of the ones to say I am highly amused at the PG typo in the title?

Edit. On DLC then while I can happily join the bashing on poor practices I am all for devs expanding games after the fact, and maybe charging a bit for it. Plenty of good stuff can happen from that.

I'd say poor ports from console to PC. The annoying mouse + keyboard buggy controls but can easily be fixed using a controller.
Developers tend to be lazy in optimizing games, either that or time constraints.

30fps caps.

Restrictive uwp format that Microsoft is trying to push. Wouldn't mind playing gears of war 4, but not interested as long it's only available in that format.

I agree about the poor ports. It's odd when PC, PS4 and XB1 are all X86/64. You'd think these devs would try better. I STILL cant play Killer is Dead and I had to get a steam refund for a Hyperdimension Neptunia game :( My other issue is with indie devs. I get if you're a super small studio, obviously you can't polish your games as much as possible. That said, EVERYONE should strive for polish. I'm seeing too many games where developers don't care anymore. It goes back to my complaint about proper button icons for different play styles. Just because you're indy it doesn't excuse you from the rules of good game design. You should always strive to be better and even try to surpass the big name companies when you can.

EDGY STATEMENT: Is not a console
SERIOUS STATEMENT: Not having a prioritized controller. (Don't mean anything xbox related) i mean a standard controller, like any console has, one standard controller to play with.)

Other than that is troubleshooting problems with pc games that can come up, and upgrading a pc.

It's bad because it only works on Win 10 systems. Other than that, it's perfectly fine.

Does it give Microsoft more control? Maybe. A simple setting change and blam, you can be running unsigned UWP apps and games. It's not a jailbreak. It's like Android, it's a simple setting change. People would complain a lot, and with probable lawsuits if the choice to run unsigned stuff was removed. It will stick around.

tried? that implies it failed correct? :P

I would have been better if it was obvious to everyone that the controller used xinput controls as a standard but gave users the ability to edit things as needed. I would have picked up one without any issue but there was nothing but confusion and most people gave it bad reviews which killed the controller for me.

My Opinion...

In General:
  • Why is split screen/local (on one device) multiplayer not the norm? If console versions of a game are able to do it, there should be no excuse to not include it on PC, especially since the PC could allow each player to have a screen of their own (by using a separate monitor for each player).
  • I really wish there was a standard for including more controller button icons then just the Xbox controller.
  • If you support a platform like the PS4, then I should be able to plug in a PS4 controller on the PC version without having to manually configure the game. It should have by default configuration that is used on the PS4 version of the game (From my experience with Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty).
When it comes to Linux:
  • While I am okay with the performance for most games, sometimes I wish game developers would put more effort in the performance of their games. For example, Sanctum 2, in my opinion, is not very well optimized on Linux. It tends to stutter sometimes.
  • I accept the fact that developers don't want to port or create modding tools for Linux, but there is no excuse to not support the ability to run mods if a game developer officially supports running mods (I am looking at you Trine 2).

It's nothing to do with it being Win10 only or wanting to run unsigned stuff. The format itself is restrictive.

Unless it's changed recently, you can't hook into it or use dll injection.

So RTSS doesn't work with it. Capping programs can't hook into so you are restricted to screen capture only.

No injection, so no reshade, sweetfx etc. Community driven fixes, like the recent one for nier automata, the fix for the original dark souls and one of the tales games, all use injection. So wouldn't work on a uwp game. No real modding, due to encrypted files.

Last I checked, all the above is still true, and injection is likely to never be possible as it's a security risk and uwp is suppose to be secure. That's not in any way "fine". If I wanted a closed system where no tampering is allowed, I'd go to console.
