Well it seems like every day new bits of information about the Switch are published, this time about the Switch OS. While one hacker guessed the Switch is running FreeBSD, two other hackers known from the 3DS scene seem to agree with each other that the Switch OS is similar to the 3DS and does not actually run FreeBSD. Since they can't be embedded here, I will just quote the relevant tweets:

So ye, doesn't look like it runs FreeBSD

Looks like it is the next iteration of the 3DS kernel, same code base

Switch has an IPC system based on 3DS, including services.

Switch OS is very similar to the 3DS OS. Most analagous syscalls are there. It does smell like a rewrite tho.

So yea, there you have it. Keep in mind that for politically correct reasons, you have to treat these information bits as guesswork, not facts.

We will probably have userland access soon, but since nvidia chip will allow many more security options, this will probably end like psvita, with a full security os :/

we just need fail mail app like in vita to start trick the system :grog:

Wew, if they were right, this is gun' be good.

"Our Nintendo 3DS system is being hacked left and right. Let's use a similar kernel, because that's a great idea!"
Honestly it's probably smart. They've already patched a lot of the security holes it had. If they created a new OS they would be back at square one with potential exploits, unlike the 3ds which has patched a lot of the issues other the hardware-based ones like a9lh that I assume they tried not to do again.

Well considering that they've not included a proper browser and that they've learned from the hackers and have patched all the security holes they've found so far, I wouldn't bank on it being as easy as you might believe it to be.

This could be pretty secure, actually. They had recently collected info on all of 3DS' hacks/exploits, so they've almost certainly plugged all the holes. We have to find new ones that nobody knew existed before.
