Well, I guess the first question that needs to be asked is if N is selling the switch at a loss or are they still getting a profit off of each sale. It each sale is a loss then they will care greatly about piracy. If they are still making a profit on each console sale then they will not care nearly as much and will only do minimal things to combat piracy. They don't want to spend more money on software engineers than they have to. Exactly why they didn't fix the wii u's holes. They got all the profit they wanted on it and spending any more money on the software engineers would take away from their profit especially being that the piracy is what helped sell the console at the end of it's life.

so then you'd have to solder it on yourself?
I so wanna troll you, but I'm going to be nice.

Yes, you can soldier it on. But it will be empty. Nothing on it. No software, no nothing. Most likely it won't even work. It's probably even encrypted (the original chip that is)

Well thank you for not trolling me, I thought it would be that case but i'm not computer engineer so I ask to be sure. :P

Its a promise that the switch's eMMC is encrypted. Nintendo wouldn't have it any other way. Soldering a bga sucks, especially being that those solder balls are probably like 0.3mm

The shitty thing is, a bga soldered to a flex cable is fucking dangerous. Imagine how fragile that thing is. Even just removing it from the motherboard could possibly damage it. Forget trying to solder a bga to a flex cable. I am a pro at soldering and I have all the right tools to do all the repairs that I want to do, but I would not even attempt to solder a bga on a flex cable. The heating profile has to be so damn perfect otherwise uneven heating will cause the flex cable to warp and then the bga is fucked. And you can only attempt to solder on a flex cable so many times before you destroy it.

Come to think of it, that was an extremely poor choice by Nintendo's engineers.

P.S. Always troll when you can. :D

It's alright. There is a reason why they added a MicroSD slot. It's because the on-board chip isn't upgradable.

Hmm... well Foxconn do have all kind of machines so it's fully possible it was a calculated choice. Also all I can see why they done like this is to be able to faster and cheaper repair the consoles.

The biggest question I have if it's possible to move that chip to a new Switch or not. It's probably bound to the Switch itself and require so special software from Nintendo to exchange.

I was actually intrigued by the "hot swap" like idea from a cfw to a clean os.
I get it. But I would assume these tiny chip + adapter is console bound. Plus CFW isn't something you should worry about now. It's a while before that is even close to be here.

Physically, yes you can put the eMMC module from one switch into another. I can promise you that it will not boot because the contents are encrypted with a per console key. It would be easy enough to copy the data from one module to another and then the console wouldn't know the difference at all. No special tools needed besides a SD card reader that doesn't suck.

Cost saving measure. So if they want to come out with a larger capacity version they just have to design a new tiny chip but cans till use the same motherboard. I can't see them giving us capacities over 128GB (maaaybe 256GB), s

I think they want to get as many consoles out in the wild as possible first. I'd intentionally leave the Switch vulnerable for the first month to get the hackers, then when all the AAA games start coming out I'd make them require a firmware update that cannot be bypassed and breaks all hacks.

Oh I know exploits don't fallout week one, hell practically year one. It's awhile away but I like the creativity through this scene is all. These ideas could shape this scene.

Every firmware update on any console can be bypassed someway, somehow, somewhere, by somebody.

this is the peaking I did while waiting in a six hour line for my midnight switch. [emoji14] I studied our enemy :) (arm.com)

Biggest size is 128GB. Toshiba haven't made any bigger and probably won't.

They probably won't make any bigger, rather they might actually make a smaller version. They added a microSD card slot for a reason... why won't people understand this?

I could've swore the Switch being originally "advertised" as x86 this go around. Maybe not. I remember when I heard about it's processor being x86, I was fucking pissed however.

EDIT: I was wrong. It's an ARM CPU and GPU. This baby's going to be easy to hack

x86 sucks, AMD64 (or some called it x86_64) on the other hand is lovely.
ARM processors are effective compared to cost, power, heat and speed.
