I live in Japan, and would like to get a Switch, but my Kanji reading skills are pretty poor.

I'm aware that the Switch is region free as far as software goes, but I'm curious whether you can choose for the console's menus to be in English, and if you can even change the region for the eShop.

Does anyone here have a Japanese console?

I would guess that the console is region-free worldwide. While I don't have a Japanese-imported console, the Switch I bought yesterday has the option to set the language to Japanese (this is notable since prior Nintendo consoles in the US didn't allow for this), French, English, etc., at any time, so it's the likely same for the Japanese.

I can also freely set the region to Japan, The Americas, Europe, or Australia/New Zealand with a simple reboot. However, this only seems to affect the way the clock is displayed, and not the eShop or anything else, thus far..

The Switch's region is what you choose it to be, it starts out asking you what language you speak

But I assume the eShop region is locked in, right?

No, you can have multiple eshop accounts on one device, of differing regions. The account you log in with is what decides what the eshop will display the contents of, at least to my knowledge.

I don't think there are any differences, no. However, if someone has a Japanese console and does find differences, please let us know. I would be kind of shocked, though.

If you live in Japan I'm quite sure you should be familiar with the look of kanji enough to get through the menus . They are pretty basic

Also, I've heard that the eshop will display everything in Japanese if you log in with a Japanese account, so purchasing things could be tricky if they use a lot of Kanji in there (haven't looked).

Yeah, sure. I have a Japanese Wii. I could. I'm asking if I have to. I'm also asking about the eShop region.

You're in Japan, right? Did you get a Switch?

Yes, you can do both things, what you need to do in the case of the eShop is to link an account of the region that you want to use, you can make multiple profiles and link them to different accounts.
