I tried to follow the WiiU Hacking Scene but I can't figure out the best method.

I just want to run backups. No cheating or modding.

I had the WiiU setup with loadiine but there must be a better method out by now.

1. install CBHC, set it to autoboot sysmenu.
2. Optional : get an HDD and format it to WiiU format (you can't use it for anything else, no partition, etc.)
3. get a game in encrypted format (disc2app or WiiU download helper) on your SD card.
4. install that game using "WUP installer y mod" to your console (or your optional USB HDD).
5. launch it from WiiU main menu.

Wait a minute, disc2app, haven't heard of that one before, does that what I think it does, because that would make me so happy!

it does !
It dumps Disc game directly to SD:/install/disc name/ all the .app here !
All you need is WUP installer.
And it's even faster to dump the disc, as it doesn't read sector by sector but reads only the useful game's data and leaves out random garbage.

it's on the wiki, if you want to find the official thread or sources.
it's probably already on Wiiubru's appstore too :)

Next homebrew step to release will be "disc2WiiU"

I haven't tried the disc2app, mostly cause i would prefer it just installed on the system directly from disc like wii flow does when you want a back up, it converts disc games to wbfs and stores it on the Device, SD/USB, which i would like since i already have a formatted wii u HDD, it would be easier. I don't really have large storage devices for things like disc2app. So while i'm not completly upset at this, i do think i should wait.

Also why is the installer mod choses over the regular (Not mod) one?

Mod = multiple installs at once, more clear error messages.

Just a dad here who works too much and never has time to do much, like thorough research for stuff like this. Last mod I did was a MOD Chip on a Gamecube. :/

For kid simplicity, I too am looking for a way to just to install games and play from the main screen.

I saw this above and have a few questions:

1. install CBHC, set it to autoboot sysmenu.
<<<Can Haxchi 2.0 be installed instead?>>>
2. Optional : get an HDD and format it to WiiU format (you can't use it for anything else, no partition, etc.)
<<<buying today>>>
3. get a game in encrypted format (disc2app or WiiU download helper) on your SD card.
<<<Does this SD card need to be a certain size and new? I would think it would need to be ample size to hold Wii U data and the game data and probably partitioned. Any specific instructions posted? Also, this is done via PC, right?>>>
4. install that game using "WUP installer y mod" to your console (or your optional USB HDD).
<<<I assume this must be done through the Homebrew Channel. If yes, which version should be installed? Should this be installed first? Best instructions?>>>
5. launch it from WiiU main menu.
<<<Once the games are installed. Can Homebrew be removed or is it required to have the saved games work?>>>

Thanks for any help!!! In my recent research (the past hour), this site seems to have the best info and courteous posters.

Yes, a sd card of 32GB minimum or higher (If higher format to fat32 using Gui32format program on windows) Yes the wiiu download helper is used on pc, but there is a android app around here that does much of the same.
<<<I assume this must be done through the Homebrew Channel. If yes, which version should be installed? Should this be installed first? Best instructions?>>>
Yes, install the wup y mod installer, version 1.3, is done through homebrew, go to this web page on wiiu web browser wiiubru.com/go, this page opens up the wii u homebrew appstore which you can then download homebrew straight to a clean formatted sd card, all the tools mentioned here in this thread are there. :)
  1. Create a folder called install on the root of the sd card.
  2. use the wiiu downloader helper to download wii u games or wiiu2app homebrew to copy disc to sd install format.
  3. put the files the program downloads into that install folder.
  4. run mocha cfw from homebrew installer, (if you using coldboot, skip this step)
  5. load wup installer y mod from homebrew launcher and install files.
  6. Exit to home menu and load the installed game.
<<<Once the games are installed. Can Homebrew be removed or is it required to have the saved games work?>>>
Homebrew is not required for the save games to work, Having coldboot or mocha cfw is enough. But also you wouldn't want to remove homebrew loader if you plan to use it again.

Very cool. Thanks for the speedy response.

Any types of SD cards I should avoid or locate? I see all of this "ultra", "ultra plus", "class 10", "EVO" and etc.

I am looking at: SanDisk Ultra PLUS 64GB microSD Card, Mobile, Class 10 for $18.93

Any hard drives recommended? I know most are not powered now and will require a Y splitter for power.

I am looking at: Seagate Backup Plus 1TB Slim Portable External Hard Drive for $59.99

If you have a signature patching CFW and the game you want to play is in a Wii VC format, then yes you can
yes so far I see Dk jungle beat as a Wii game I do want to try out but there are many more I don't think are on eshop or will ever be. It's mostly all 1st party title but hopefully we can soon install our own legacy titles as a vc app too

I'm also getting confused as to which cfw is best. it may be preference but I want the whole package. what's better mocha or cbhc?

Well, cbhc has an offline coldboot solution, and both cbhc and mocha do the same patching (regionhax, sigpatches...)
It depends on what you want and if yoy can/want to spend money on a ds vc title or if you want offline hax (and I've made a tutorial on how to have a ''coldboot'' setup without cbhc btw)

I've just been doing everything through loadiine webpage. the coldboot solution you speak of, you're saying that you figured out a way to not have to purchase a DS game?

More or less yes, but you need an internet connection.
My tutorial is here if you want to take it a look

You could always "cold boot" to a web page. That's not anything new. Haxchi plus CBHC gives you much more control on what you're actually booting to. It can be the normal HaxChi CFW or any other elf or CFW you want. CBHC rocks and is best solution in my opinion. It's faster to boot than mocha over internet
