Hacking Cant restore system

A friend just asked about console that he just formatted, he says the settings said he was on 4.78.

What happened:
Rebooted the console, when it started again he got this screen:

after that he was asked to format, but doesnt help out
anything he can do?

Hardware failure seems like the problem. The NOR/NAND chip doesn't just get messed up randomly. If he tried to update it won't let him?

Try a new hdd and/or try one or two other firmwares (make sure to try 3.55).
