I have arm9loaderhax (is it the correct term?). Can I update via System Settings, Other Settings, System Update or using that Luma updater app?

When I boot Hourglass9, what is the correct option: SysNAND Backup or EmuNAND Backup? What NAND am I using, anyway? SysNAND or EmuNAND?

You can update to 11.3 through System Settings, just make sure that Luma3DS is running, so that FIRM0 and FIRM1 partitions are protected during the update process.

How do I make sure that Luma3DS is running? I'm not sure of the difference between EmuNAND and SysNAND, I'm not sure which one I am using and which one I should backup.

If you followed 3ds.guide, you just have sysNAND.

If you completely followed through https://3ds.guide you'd have Luma3DS loading upon booting your 3DS. And if you didn't skip the process of injecting FBI into Health & Safety app and then copy and pasted arm9loaderhax.bin included with Luma3DS, then restoring the Health & Safety app back, then I'm sure your 3DS is safe to update.

But if for any reason that you haven't got it copied to CTR_NAND and are using older exploits, then make sure you run Luma3DS from the Homebrew Launcher, then update your emuNAND in System Settings (assuming you're using emuNAND).

I followed all the instructions of the guide. I have the FBI app working, it has the FBI logo and it works as such. What do you mean by restoring the Health & Safety app back? To have the original Health & Safety logo showing up instead of the FBI logo?

If your Health And Safety app shows the FBI logo still, then you skipped a step. You are supposed to reinject the .hs back once you get done installing all your cias like HBL, FBI and LumaUpdater

I'm actually hoping for a mini-CFW (similar to NTR CFW) that will actually read any Gateway-based flash cards.

With the 11.3 update gives us a constant reminder that the Gateway-based flash cards as well as their software need to be reverse engineered so that we can find out how they work and how to develop software that can do RAM editing functions and read 3DS ROMs from flash cards, as well as the project being open-source so that it can be constantly updated by a huge community, without much wait between newer updates to support newer firmwares.

It would also be nice if that software could also store save files on the flash card's microSD card as well.
See this thread. Seems like the relevant people don't really care about GW flashcards :(

Oh then that's good,
I think I should be fine then staying on an older FW (I don't see why people would use a newer one yet besides fixing apps, or tools.)

Lets hope Miamoto doesn't come knocking on my door asking me to update the system or else basically interrogate me with his ways of doing so at his HQ :P.
Well, for example Pokemon Shuffle (yes, I know it's a shabby game but still) requires the newest system update just to check in. Weird, most games are not so demanding and you can play online with an older firmware.

Oh really? I was sure I followed every step. Is there a problem with having skipped that or should I do it? Do you get a separate FBI app to install CIA files?

If i'm correct when you turn on your 3ds you don't automatically "boot it up" into Luma3ds. To the best of my knowledge it goes right to the home menu when you turn your 3ds on after installing CFW and doing all the steps. Luma, fbi and hbl should just be an app after that. (minus booting into Luma3ds with select) i assume when you turn your 3ds on it should just go right into home menu. Correct me if im wrong

Actually, the H&S app often keeps the FBI icon even after injecting with hs.app again. To fix it, you need to use Chulhu to clear the home menu icon cache.

That could be a possibility, I thought I had followed all the steps of the older version of the guide (https://github.com/Plailect/Guide/wiki). Anyway, is there anything I can't do if I skipped that part? Everything seems to work fine to me. How can I check if I am missing something (and if I missed those steps)?

Run the Health and Safety app. If FBI starts, you didn't restore it.

Check if arm9loaderhax.bin is in the CTR_NAND directory. Which can be seen using FBI. If it's there, then there isn't anything to worry about when booting. But if it's not there, copy and paste arm9loaderhax.bin into the CTR_NAND directory on the sysNAND

Check if you have a backup of your H&S app, before you injected FBI into H&S app.

The best way to know if H&S has been restored, is by it's banner that appears on the top screen on the Home Menu when you've got the cursor on the icon.
