2.) they cannot marry however they can get to A support
3.) the original one will appear in cutscenes however both will cause you to lose if they die in combat
4.) you need a hex editor such as HxD

I have two final questions:

1. Will the game know Gaius has been added to your party (Barracks - Candy tree decor and profile), or does that also involve hex editing.
2. If Phila has no character value, how is this possible (both portrait, cut-in portrait, and character model):

1. yes the game knows that if you have a character you have the extra bits (tested with Gaius)
2. that is achieved with rom hacking and cannot be done by just modifying your save see more here

The Bad News: All of my items in the convoy were wiped, including my DLC records, and apparently, Gaius is randomly married to Miriel (who was already married to Virion). There was also a weird japanese text item (x37 of these) in my convoy, as well as equipped to a few of my units. At one point I imported a decompressed file and lost all my data. Luckily, I backed up my original save, and I'm back to square one (no Gaius). What I actually did was clone Lon'qu (who was already married to Tharja, with Noire as his daughter)

How do I add Gaius to my party, without any screwy side-effects?

Yep, that's normal if you add or remove a unit.

you must clone a unmarried unit otherwise stuff like that happens also don't clone an avatar logbook character

It has to be decompressed with the Fire Emblem Awakening Save Tool (FEAST). And the alpha build is the only one that's runs it, since the nightly builds don't do jack.

I cloned an unmarried unit (Vaike), and it STILL reset my DLC, Wireless Content, and erases items in my convoy. And I still get japanese character items that replace any forged weapons on-hand.

Has anyone ever successfully added a character through hex editing, because I feel like a guinea pig in all of this. I just want Gaius with out losing my stuff, and I can't think of anyway I can prevent the game from glitching my save file. Has this even been tested?

Try to update your Homebrew Launcher by downloading and extracting the latest starter pack and overriding your current files.

First and foremost, I missed (killed) Gaius (back when he was recruitable), I advanced pretty far in the game, I have a few (four) streetpass units (other people's avatars) and spotpass units (King Marth, Roy, Ike, Eliwood, Athena, Eldigan, Lyn, Sigurd, DLC Seliph, DLC Eirika, DLC Leif, DLC Alm), married everyone but Vaike, Donnel, Anna, Yen'fay, Priam, Say'ri, Flavia, Basilio, and Tiki (have not recruit Emmeryn, Gangrel, Walhart, or Aversa YET), recruited every kid (Lucina, Gerome, Inigo, Cynthia, Noire, Yarne, Owain, Nah, Laurent, Kjelle, Brady, Severa, and Morgan), downloaded all of the spotpass paralogues (the ones after chapter 25), downloaded and played a few DLC xenologues, and obtained the bonus items (Book of Naga, Gae Bolg, etc.), as well as the Silver Card.

Here's exactly what happened:
-I put Vaike as my first unit, with all his Axe items (Helswath, Tomahawk, Silver Axe, Killer Axe, and Superior Axe) still on him (Helswath equipped). He is a Warrior class with HP+5, Zeal, Sol, Wrath, and Axefaire.
-I backed up/exported my game with JK's Save Manager.
-I decompressed my save file with FEAST
-I opened my Chapter0 file through Fire Editor v0.5-35-alpha (the only version that doesn't load forever).
-I cloned Vaike, saved my change, two Vaikes, opened my file in the HxD program, searched for Vaike's hex value, search a second time for his clone's value, changed that to Gaius' value, saved, reloaded my altered file, Gaius is there right after Vaike (but has ALL of Vaike's skills, his class, his level, and experience), changed Gaius' class to Thief at level 1, got rid of his skills and changed them to Locktouch, Movement+1, and Counter, saved changes.
-I recompressed my decompressed folder with FEAST. Last time, I didn't, and it resulted in a new game.
-I imported my changed data with JK's Save Manager
-As soon I start my game, my save data is there. However:
-I get this message as soon as the map loads: 1) New data has been delivered to the Bonus Box. If you haven't received the data, go to Wireless>Bonus Box and select Update Now. (7/11)
-Every last item in my convoy not taken by a unit member is now GONE.
-I originally had three forged weapons (one each for three unit members (Donnel, Sully, Gregor)). These three items are now replaced with japanese text items (which have zero use).
-As for Gaius, he's in my party, he has his decor in the barracks and his profile, but he's equipped with Vaike's Helswath (while as a Thief, with an E sword rank). And he has a C rank support with Libra. Also, he STILL has all of Vaike's skills (the ones I mentioned above) as available skills (just not equipped)
-Stats: His HP is 60, rating 148, Str 23, Movement 6, Mag 4, Skill 31, Spd 30, Lck 26, Def 20+5, Res 9, Exp 44, Atk 41, Hit 119, Crit 25, Avo 58. Unmarried
-And lastly, the Outrealm Gate (DLC) have NO record of any turns in my purchased xenologue maps.

And all of this was just for Gaius. Hell, I haven't even attempted Female Avatar and Boy Morgan (since I have no way of making Boy Morgan Donnel's child, complete with hair and parent status). But right now, Gaius alone is too much of chore.

Or better yet, how about I sent you my save (freshly backed up from JK's Save Manager), since you can clone/hex characters with no issues.

Edit: I just did what was listed and nothing odd happened except I did get the notification with the bonus box alert, none of my dlc was missing, my items were not gone and the custom weapons did not change. therefore I can only assume that it is an error on your end though I don't know what could of caused it.

Edit the second: OK after loading it again all the things you listed happened, I still have no clue why however.

Here is my save file (the clean one), as well as the one that botched my items (actually I'll just give you the whole folder)

My Data is the current clean save file, while My Data 2 is the botched one.

The only addition I want added to my save file is a legit Gaius. No items lost or corrupted.

My closest guess would be that there is a value that dictates if you have any given character (if they are alive, dead, or never recruited) and this value changes the entire file's offset. Because of this it would be very difficult to locate and preserve all the information affected by this. You could just add Gaius then using the editor give yourself any given amount of items. Though I could understand why you wouldn't want to that. I will continue to look in to it however it could take a while.

Edit: the names of the forged weapons are still in the save file (bronze sword, bronze lance) giving more weight to the previous statement.

Edit the second: In fact all the items are still there.
