Hardware Controller look very uncomfortable

Tell me again when Nintendo Switch is in your hand and see if your opinion remain the same or change your mind again. ;)
Only if the Joy-Cons are improved with a proper analogue stick and a real d-pad but I don't see either happening, it looks like Nintendo settled down with what they've shown already. Not much luck finding a deal on a Switch Pro Controller right now but it's still early.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

I agree with you. I admit that I miss a regular D-pad myself too. However, I am willing to move on, thought.
That honestly doesn't even qualify as a "d-pad" it's just a bunch of buttons.

I suspect that companies like Madcatz, POP, Afterglow and Hori will eventually release custom Joycons to address and capitalizeon concerns over the default controller, but yes - it seems bad. That being said, our hands-on testers enjoyed them, so I guess the Joycon pair can't be abysmal to use.

As long as the Switch is a moderate success, meaning sells better than the Wii U and there's a market for such add-ons, they will definitely make some - you want to give them money and they want to take it, so it's a match made in heaven.

I feel like I'm the only one who never uses the dpad unless I have to. I'd honestly rather have it like it is, essentially two snes controllers with analogs instead of dpads, instead of having a proper dpad, the pro controller has a proper one (albeit it is sold separately) if I ever need it.

Well they would have to create Joy-Cons with an NFC chip and recreate HD rumble. I imagine this may be very hard to accomplish.

Good point.

The Joy-Cons have the technology that allows one to tell and feel what is shown on the screen so in this case, you need to close your eyes and just feel it.

I'll reserve my opinion until I've tried the Switch controllers.

Though it's pretty obvious that it's smaller compared to their previous consoles, we'll just have to wait and see.
As for other controllers:
Old regular 3DS was fine for me at first until I've tried playing for longer hours, the bottom edge just buries and hurts my palm after a while.
Old 3DS XL not so much due to the curve edges but it's still cramp and uncomfortable if you play too long same with New 3DS XL. Solved it by getting a Monster Hunter grip.
Same goes with PSV phat, solved it with a grip. I haven't tried the slim.
Gamecube controller was perfect for me.
No problem with the gimmicky wii motion controller but it takes a while to adapt especially the motion sensor.
No problem also with the wii pro controller.
PS3 is good but it gets uncomfortable for a while.
Xbox 360 was also perfect, ergonomic-wise and comfortability for prolong plays. The only problem was the d-pad but was resolved by the transforming d-pad.
Wii U gamepad was okay but I have a problem with the weight especially if you've played long enough.
Mouse and keyboard, pc master race! hehe just kidding. Yeah, it depends on the game, RTS and FPS works well with these. :P

I haven't tested and played with xbox one and ps4 controllers.

Most of us played enough different consoles and controllers but we've obviously adapted no matter how weird or difficult it is to control. Heck, I've even played on smartphones to the point where it hurts my fingers after playing an insane amount of time. haha.

They most certainly wouldn't - custom controllers have no obligation to implement the full spec. Custom PS4 controllers don't use SIXAXIS and custom XBO ones are all wired as far as I know.

They would if they want to create competitive replacement controllers. In any case, GBAtemp's server is killing me right now.

Yea i gotta say.
As portable mode, it seems like it wouldnt be a problem and would feel nice. (same as the wii u gamepad was a bit weird at first but felt nice in the end)

With the controllers split it seems a bit weird since the joy cons are so small. And holding one in each hand seems like you might drop it or hit the wrong buttons trying to hold on to it and press the correct buttons.

Now as multi player with it turn side ways. It seems like it might work.
I have a 8bitdo game controller and it is small and seems like it would of been uncomfortable but once i got it and use it was pretty nice.

Now adding the joycon grip. Seems a bit on the cramp side and seem like it will be uncomfortable, but it will be an easy fix.
Im willing to bet someone will make a better grip for the controllers.
Hello once i get mines ill probably get the cad files and 3d print a grip.

Also does anyone know how the controllers charger?
It would seem that everything is wireless. So NFC and inductive charging.
I do wonder tho. Because 20hrs of gameplay is nice, but what do you do when they die in the middle of a game.

That was my first thought as well.
People pick up consoles over PC for accessibility.(controllers, moving easily around etc)

but both the joycon and the pro controller doesnt look very "pro gaming".

It looks like it doesnt have analogue triggers?

The Pro Controller is just a traditional controller and no, it doesn't have analogue triggers. It's digital triggers.

@SylverReZ if you could find a v5 DS ML you would have the best of both worlds since the v5 units had the same backlight brightness levels as the DS Lite unlockable with flashme

A woman with no arms and no legs was sitting on a beach. A man comes along and the woman says, "I've never been hugged before." So the man feels bad and hugs her. She says "Well i've also never been kissed before." So he gives her a kiss on the cheek. She says "Well I've also never been fucked before." So the man picks her up, and throws her in the ocean and says "Now you're fucked."

anyways, we need to re-normalize physical media

if i didn't want my games to be permanent, then i'd rent them

Agreed, that why I try to buy all my games on disc, Xbox anyways. Switch games (which I pirate tbh) don't matter much, I stay offline 24/7 anyways.

@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM

  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60

    :rofl2:
  • cearp @ cearp:
still, I agree physical media is nice to have. just pointing out the issue is drm
