But the nes doesnt exit the Fel mode by itself. When dumping, flashing, etc., the screen remains off. When i manualy restart the nes the screen turns on.

Are you sure that your nes is in fel mode?

Here is a quick video of the procedure. It's quite fast since I am only trying to install one a ROM this time. Everything says its done.

You will see that at the end my NES Mini automatically boots up despite it being in FEL mode.
**EDIT** Windows Defender was on. Once I disabled it everything worked. Here is a updated video.

So with dumping and flashing the kernel, seems I'm able to get it working by starting each time with the NES unplugged before selecting the option inside the app. Previously I'd left it plugged in each time and it was giving me the pipe error. However, this makes no difference for uploading the ROMS.

windows7 64bit.
Hold reset then press power button.
Windows detect unknown device.
Install drivers.
Run hakchi.exe
Add games + art
Click add games.
hakchi will tell you to flash your mini and dump stuff.
Wait for it to finished then it will tell you it is safe to start adding games.

I had no errors, all went smooth under 10mins.
Added tetris and mike tyson's punchout.
Gun nac has some font text issues but once you start to play it is fine.

Thanks for the awesome hack and good luck to everyone who plan on installing - it works!

Tried with the Famicom (why not) and it tells me the kernel is already patched or an unknown revision (assuming it must be different). For anyone that does/doesn't have this working on the NES version, are you using EU/US versions?

US version here.
All the roms i flashed on the nes mini was also US, except for smb2j. But that rom was hacked to work with a nes mapper instead.

Is there anyway to remove a rom off the nes classic, one I added gives me a grey screen when launching.

Yes I can also confirm this softmod works & awesome program btw:)

Great job and very user friendly!

Plays all my backup cartridges just fine. I'm using a USA console with region specific games and all added tested out fine.

Cheat code additions would also be a nice to have in near future.

Spasibo my friend.

Does anyone with an EU version actually have it working? I've tried multiple region ROM's now including US, Europe and Unl all of which don't show up. Out of ideas at this point... Again, anything like logs etc I can upload please let me know. Other than that I think it's time to sit this one out until someone figures it out!

Yes.

I've just registered here to say thanks so much. This is incredible. I've just added an extra 60 games with no problems what so ever and no sign of the memory being full at all. What a triumph.

a. Turn off all firewalls, anti-virus, etc
b. Try running the haxchi2 as administrator.
c. If above don't work run Zadig as administrator.

Yep, tried all of the above... no dice. My PC just does not like the driver.

Do I need to have the HDMI plugged in or a controller? Currently just using a usb cable to my pc. Am I missing anything else that is obvious to others but not me...?

Ok, so I have it working. For anyone that's been having the same issues I have, I did the below and it worked.

On whatever version of the software you're using at the moment. Unplug the NES, select flash original kernel, follow the steps and hopefully you will have no pipe errors. Then delete your current installation. This should get you back to a clean NES. Then...
  • Turn off Windows Defender (might not be needed but previously I'd transferred from a mac via USB stick)
  • Download the latest version of the software
  • Run the software again while the NES is unplugged
  • Select the dump kernel option and follow the steps
  • Unplug the NES
  • Select flash custom kernel option
  • Unplug the NES
  • Add ROM's to the program
  • Select upload selected games and follow steps
Hopefully like me you'll now have the LED turn off correctly once completed and your NES won't restart, hope that is of use to some people.

Thanks!

I decided to try the Famicom mini. I was initially reluctant because of the checksum error, but decided to give it a try and it worked!. But again, I would use the this at your own risk for the Famicom mini. I added in a translated version of Final Fantasy III and it works! Great tool, it worked for both my Nes classic and Famicom. Amazing! Thanks, Cluster!
