Bit of a wiiu noob here but I bought my daughter a wiiu for christmas, I had to update it as soon as I switched it on. Its now on 5.5.1 and basically, I want to hack it so she can play wiiu back ups off either an SD card or external hdd. can this be done, if so, can one of you wiiu legends point me in the right direction of an easy to follow tutorial with all the correct downloads I need. Thanks in advance guys, any help with this will b e very much appreciated. Hope my post doesnt seem daft but I guess we gotta start somewhere

It's really easy to install Wii U games to the internal storage or a USB drive once you know what you're doing. You don't even need to deal with CFW if you don't care about DLC and stuff like that.

Edit: As the guide suggests, I recommend you use this program to download your games.

I also recommend that you use the DNS method to block updates so you stay on 5.5.1.

Thanks, much appreciated. One of the reasons I love this forum. Always someone offering to help. As long as my daughter can play back ups off an external then I'm happy with it. I prefer CFW myself but that's just me

This is the road I will go down I think, I modded a wii a few years ago and everything worked so well. Im gonna get this done at the weekend. Ive got a 4gb sd card, will this be big enough to use to install cfw? Ive got a 300 gb external, hdd I can use for games.

4gb is going to limit you. Some games are bigger than that and all have to be installed using the SD. Even if you install to USB HD

yes, u only need a large capacity SD card to install redNAND. if u want to go the sysNAND root, that should be large enough. I've downloaded virtually every downloadable title for the wii u, and it still didn't surpass 1TB. it's kinda close.

oh, yeah, I had forgotten about that. ur going to be installing from the SD card, so large games like tropical freeze won't work. the problem is placing the games on the SD card to install to USB.

Right so if I had a larger sd card, i can install games roms to the sd card then install to an external hhd directly from the sd card, is that right? I can pick up a bigger sd card. Im sure I saw 32GB one for less than £20. Will thyat be big enough or do i need to go bigger?

the largest game on the wii u is around 20GBs. that should be large enough for that, just note the number of games u can install is directly proportional based to the size of the SD card. u install from the SD card to the USB or internal flash. u don't install directly to the SD card.

The SD card is used to just INSTALL the games. You copy the install files to the SD then you use WUP installer to install them onto the Wii U internal memory or USB.

Im looking at a 32 gb, I can install to the sd card then to an external hdd, once the game is installed to the external hdd, I can delete it off the sd card then do another the same way????

Right, I'll get a 64gb card to be on the safe side then Im away.

u don't install to the SD card at all. the SD card is just for storing files which r installed to the USB or internal flash. 64GB is good. I have a 256GB card for loadiine games, redNAND, and the rest 50GB or so, is for installing content. there r a few games that can't be installed. one of the JUST Dance games I believe is one of them. the reason is that the installable files include one with a size larger than 4GBs. yeah, ur SD card must be in fat32 format as well. there r only around 3 games that I've found with that limitation.

well rednand is wasted space atm.
We only need rednand once nintendo releases a new update what probably never happens because nintendo stopped the production of the wiiu

Can you tell us which ones? Just out of pure curiosity. It would prevent wasting bandwidth and time on a game that can't be installed.

what are the benefits of rednand anyway? Do I need it? Can I get by without it? If the biggest game is 20gb then I will make do with a 32gb which I will buy in the morning. I wont wait to have one posted but go and buy one

There's no real reason to use redNAND unless you want to play with hacking system files. I don't use it or Mocha for that matter. CBHC handles all my needs
