Welcome to GBAtemp's 2nd annual game of the year voting thread! It's time to pick what you think was the best release of 2016, all the way from A to Z! The staff has agreed upon 50 games which will be up in the poll above so that the community can choose their favorite title from 2016. Out of the 50 listed, 25 of these games will be making it to round 2. For this round, you can choose 5. Happy voting!

I'm a little sad fantastic games like The Witness are getting almost no votes.
I'm sad there's no love for Oxenfree too. (at least, someone else voted for that game too, I'm not alone yay) @yodamerlin: thank you for liking this game! I guess not a lot of users played it.
I sent a request to the devs to add subtitles for the radio, and they added it! (not sure if I was the only one requesting it). I also sent a bug report, but haven't read about it in the changelog.

I have always been curious about witness, but never bought it.

I didn't play a lot of games from that list (only 4 of them, but I didn't vote for No Man's sky, it's good but very repetitive, even if I'm at the beginning, I just started it).

It's too bad there is no Rise of the Tomb Raider (because it was released last year on XB1, but I'm sure most people played it on PS4/PC this year).
I would have vote for that game if it was in the list.

I loved Transistor (but it's not 2016?)
I would have vote for Thumper too, I really liked the first level in the free PSVR disc demo. I'll buy it later (too many games to play right now, let's focus!)

So, FF15, Oxenfree and Ratchet & Clank are the only 3 I can vote this year.

Like in the last year thread, here is my year's completed game list:

Radiant Historia (DS)
Xenoblade Chronicles X (WiiU)
Grim Fandango (PS4)
Toren (PS4)
Knack (PS4)
Scurge Hive (DS)
Transistor (PS4)
Ratchet & Clank 2016 (PS4)
Never alone (PS4)
Gravity Rush remastered (PS4)
Star Ocean 4 (PS3) (started in 2010, finally went back to it this year)
Mass effect 1 (PS3) (started in 2013, finally went back to it this year)
Vagrant Story (PS1 on PSP)
Oxenfree (PS4)
Kingdom Hearts Birth by sleep (PSP) (started in 2013, finally went back to complete it!)
Tomb Raider: Rise of the tomb Raider (PS4)

uncompleted: No man's sky.
uncompleted: PSVR Games: Robinson, VEV, Gunjack
Currently playing : Final Fantasy XV

Haven't played most of these games either.
Voted for Hyper Light Drifter and Overwatch. Really enjoyed those games when they came out; spent so much time on them.
Drifter was like a kind of game I wasn't sure I'd like, but ended up loving it! The pixel art was amazing, the controls (mostly) fluid, and some of the concepts were really neat.
With Overwatch, well, I'm sure others have said much already xD I've been playing since the open beta weekend, and haven't played TF2 since. Not that I don't like TF2, I just enjoy Overwatch more now. Man, I love playing McCree. Seems like we never have games with cool cowboys anymore.
Anywho, there's my vote. Good luck everyone!

Voted for three but I don't expect anything sensible to win after last years 'Undertale' Fiasco.

And where is World of Final Fantasy? Surely that's a more significant release than some of the straight-to-DVD guff on that list.

Gamecube one of the best? I will give it has aged far better than the N64 ever did (I am tempted to do the N64 was a failure thing again but that has already derailed enough threads) but otherwise never heard that before. Most I ever speak to consider it a bit of weaksauce flop, though a fine example of first party CPR and seemingly Nintendo's post SNES business model.

And yes compared to previous efforts it has no games*, most of the people making the nice games on the DS vanished to do other devices or have done token efforts.

*I have done the milestones of the DS and GBA vs the 3ds before, I am too lazy right now so I will link http://www.abgx.net/nds_releases_date.txt and http://www.abgx.net/3ds_releases_date.txt , you can do a year by year if you want.

I'm kinda shocked that things like civ 6, xcom 2, and Tyranny have so few votes. I mean I know gbatemp is predominately console oriented but I'm still surprised it's to this extent.

Asking if gbatemp liked the last pokemon game is like going to a generic xbox fan forum for opinions about halo.

The results as a whole exist in a special little echochamber of tunnelvision, fanboyism, and little exposure to anything else. You don't have to take them seriously nor get particularly mad at them by now.

It's a DS Lite in a slightly bigger DS Lite shell.

@SylverReZ if you could find a v5 DS ML you would have the best of both worlds since the v5 units had the same backlight brightness levels as the DS Lite unlockable with flashme

A woman with no arms and no legs was sitting on a beach. A man comes along and the woman says, "I've never been hugged before." So the man feels bad and hugs her. She says "Well i've also never been kissed before." So he gives her a kiss on the cheek. She says "Well I've also never been fucked before." So the man picks her up, and throws her in the ocean and says "Now you're fucked."

anyways, we need to re-normalize physical media

if i didn't want my games to be permanent, then i'd rent them

Agreed, that why I try to buy all my games on disc, Xbox anyways. Switch games (which I pirate tbh) don't matter much, I stay offline 24/7 anyways.

    I don't pirate them, I Use Them :mellow:. Like I do @BigOnYa 's couch :tpi::evil::rofl2:

@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM
  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60

    :rofl2:
  • cearp @ cearp:
still, I agree physical media is nice to have. just pointing out the issue is drm
  • rqkaiju2 @ rqkaiju2:
i like physical media because it actually feels like you own it. thats why i plan on burning music to cds
  • cearp @ cearp:
It's nice to not have to have a lot of physical things though, saves space
