Could you imagine if you can just walk to a game store like gamestop or whatever and just buy flashcarts for consoles? That be insane, chaotic even. :P

I guess is not illegal, but then again, nintendo never licensed that product for the systems. So... I'm not really one to debate this, i use them since they have cool features.

This entire site lingers in a grey area of legality. We don't provide anything illegal, but we obviously endorse illegal activity such as piracy. Flashcarts aren't directly illegal themselves, but they are obviously not completely legal either and their usage is obviously not just for personal backups.

Yes, good, keep balancing that scale of good and bad. :P

Joking aside, for one thing, is not licensed product. Then another it allows for piracy. But the idea behind it was to not be needing to swap out games all the time or to keep them in safe place so you don't have to buy a new copy again if you somehow lose or damage it. I wish there was a stricter focus on homebrew than "Backup protection" Cause it seem to never be the case with these tools like flashcarts and CFW. This is why people get the wrong idea about the product.

I think it might actually depend on the flashcart on whether or not it's actually illegal. Granted, what you're actually going to use the flashcart for in all likelihood is probably illegal, but that's another issue.

If the flashcart comes with no firmware, and you have to flash the firmware yourself, I'd say the flashcart itself is legal. Granted, the company is probably distributing firmware that is technically illegal because it contains bootcode stolen from legit carts, but the physical flashcart you receive is perfectly legal before you flash it.

My memory might be a bit hazy on the details, I have A9LH on my 3DS and seldom use DS flashcarts anymore...

Believe it or not, NDS flash carts were on store shelves to some extent in the US years ago. I purchased a Datel "Games 'N Music" card from Best Buy that advertised features like NES emulation, and if I recall correctly there were patches released to allow actual NDS ROM loading. Those days are long gone though.

Believe it or not, those CFWs aren't completely legal. CFWs rarely provide illegal files (expect ReiNAND) but the firmware.bin is not actually a legal file.
