Hello;

I would like to know what are the disadvantages of a Japanese New 3ds?

Ill probably get one, do a9lh on it, bu my question is, what are the disadvantages of this?

  • I have heard that the Japanese consoles are fully in Japanese, this does not really affect me, but, does the cia installed games, being USA/EUR stays also on Japanese? or they can be played normally?
  • I have heard that you CANT link a USA NNID on a Japanese 3DS, is this true?
  • Can i play online my cia installed games? not necessarily with a NNID?
  • Are there any other disadvantages of having a J-Console? if any.

Regards! C:

1) Some games will play in Japanese if they have the language available (eg, Smash Bros) but you can easily get around this with Luma locale settings.

2) Fairly sure your NNID is limited to the region you made it on, it makes sense anyway.

3) You can play online, I play English MH4U and MHGen without issue. There's no reason for you not to make a Japanese NNID though.

4) I really can't think of any. Having the Japanese eShop is great in my opinion.

  • Games will use the language from the region of the 3DS by default (if available). In your case, Smash would default to Japanese but you can get around with Luma's locale setting etc (regardless of language available in-game).
  • That is very much true. The 3DS A9LH guide talks about region swapping, and one of the points made is:
This process will unlink your NNID from the system, since it will no longer be compatible with it. NNID’s are locked to the region of the device that created them, and cannot be transferred between regions without a very complex and advanced process.
  • Yes you can. I've done this loads of times. The only issue you'd ever have is playing a game which has yet to be released (if at all) in your region (ala Sun/Moon leaked bans).
  • The only disadvantage would be having all your games default to Japanese (thus having to use Luma's locale switcher almost all the time). Region locked games are no longer an issue with Luma either though, so it's no different from an EU or US 3DS at that point. You'd also have to side-load updates for out of region games as you'll not be able to access the eShop to update them (as the regions are different).

You have to download the updates manually for out of region games, all of them. All your menu and interface are in Japanese. DLCs are not region free, you have to manually set stuff for them to work.

I have a Japanese n3ds that I region swapped to USA. Only limitation is that the eshop doesn't work. Playing online works fine.

If you don't region swap it then the eshop should work fine, but the menus and everything will be in Japanese. Luma should let you set language per title though to make sure games run in English. I've never used it, but here's an application that's supposed to help with that: https://github.com/Possum/LumaLocaleSwitcher

In the case of Ultimate NES Remix, it's not really regionfree, it's the way how the leaderboard system programmed to connect to. It checks the region of your 3DS and not the game. Because of that, you will get an error when you boot the game. I can't confirm if this also happens with wi-fi turned off.

The only major one I can think of is if the 3ds is on 11.0 you need hardmod to downgrade as all dsiwarehax games where taken down from japan

You cannot do local play with non-japanese games even with Luma+A9LH installed, they will say that an error occured when trying to connect, I tried with MK7 (european version downloaded on JP 3ds and a retail version in my EUR n3ds and it didn't work)

Unless you can get a Japanese 3ds for rock-bottom price, there's no reason to buy a Japanese 3ds over a European/USA so as long as you can hack it.

Can anyone else confirm this is right? AFAIK this only happens with DLP-client (download play) games, the way mk7 local play works is that it defaults to DLP regardless if the other player has the game or not, so it wouldn't work for out of region games. However only the first 3DS games have this, very little titles support DLP

The biggest drawback for me is that the menus are in Japanese and i don't think you can change the language at all, not even with cfw. Games can be spoofed with Luma3ds Locale though.

you can change the language of the menus, but you lose the ability to enter eshop.

Afaik you do not need an NNID to play local multiplayer, neither for online.
I don't have an NNID linked to any of my 3 consoles and they work online/local just fine.

As a long time monster hunter fan and JN3DS owner, let me tell you i had a blast playing with japanese players than NA/EU players. Less server side issues, less idiots, just a better experience overall. And as for local multiplayer, you just have to ensure everyone has installed the same region game.

This confuses me alot,

So... i will get a japanese 3ds.... i will region change it to US using plailect guide.. so at this point:
Would i be able to link an USA NNID to the system?
The games im going to install are from FreeShop, are the server that its going to connect USA or Japan?
