Yes, update to 5.5.1 while you can. There will be an update soon that will likely patch all exploits out. AFTER the update, block updates using a DNS server or other method.

Source? Wii U is dead and I doubt big n will waste time patching anything 16 weeks away from the switch launch.
Nintendo will 100% bring out a new update when the new zelda game comes out and they will make the game only work with the latest update to stop people getting the game for free.

This. There will be an update on disc for Zelda and it will be the last. Nintendo won't release Zelda on U if it can be stolen it would damage Zelda sales and Switch sales and right now switch is way too important to risk a killer app being available free somewhere else.
It is far more likely that Nintendo will cancel zeldaU completely than let it run on 5.5.1 (or a spoofed fw) and personally I think this outcome more likely, it all depends on whether big N feels cancelling will damage the consumer loyalty and trust.

I really want this "oh it stopped production so it means it's dead" meme to stop.
Nintendo probably stopped production because there is enough stock for foreseeable future of sales while Switch is already being prepared for the future lineup. Much like other systems, there will be stock for year or two at least even if not produced giving how poorly Wii U has overall performed in sales overall. Nintendo and other companies still produce software for Wii U though, and system updates and especially ones to tuck off this blatant piracy problem right away are in good agenda for nintendo. Especially when something as big as breath of the wild is coming out.

For pete's sake, end of production does not mean what you people think it means. You can claim "Wii U is dead in water" when it is not having the biggest nintendo release after pokemon still coming out for it.

Snip.
I personally find the whole 'dead' console crowd pretty distasteful, I mean as it stands the WiiU is practically capable of playing every Nintendo console game ever released as well as a huge number of others, it's nearly open now to any bedroom coders who want to use it as well as it's vwii homebrew.

It's probably the most 'alive' console going atm depending on your point of view and anyone who limits themselves just to a ps4/xboxO are the ones really missing out.

Some gamers act like you can't enjoy more than one system at a time and once the system is no longer current it goes in the bin, this is largely the case with the big 2 but jeez my kids still use our Wii all the time.

Nintendo is very much alive in our house supported officialy or not

When spoofing is a thing what exactly would that achieve?

Everyone would say on 5.5.1 and spoof 5.6, continue to enjoy their free games and still be able to play BOTW.

Because spoofing is just that, you tell a game that you have 5.6 firmware. But what if the firmware adds something that the game depends on? For example, think back to 3DS when 9.6 firmware came out, adding new crypto. Games that were made after it, and depended on it, didn't work on older firmwares than that.

Cutting off their nose to spite their face? They know exactly what the Wii U is capable of in the hands of hackers and it works out better for them to just release and accept it will be pirated. Anybody considering a Switch is doing so regardless of BOTW and any one planning to pirate is doing so regardless of the Switch.

10,000 Wii U sales is still better than 0 Wii U sales.

That's assuming they want to pay someone to spend the time developing the new feature for the dead console.

And yes, its dead. Production has ended, it has one more big release to go, it hasn't been updated in months, none of its first party games have been updated in months and they've basically ignored the fact it has been hacked for 12 months.

As you said they went and still go out of their way to try and annoy DS hackers by adding new stuff to firmware updates, the Wii U has been hackable for 12 months now and they've never even bothered to release a minor update to patch the exploits.

When the developers abandon something its dead.

For you maybe, I didn't buy my WiiU for cutting edge, multi plat releases. In your opinion it's dead, in my opinion it's not dead untill I pack it away in a box.

It seems like you're annoyed that lots of us still love our WiiU's and aren't of the same opinion as yourself.

Sucks to be you.

Oh and I'm fairly certain Nintendo make their revenue from using in house development teams and self publishing making software sales prime revenue, not console sales.

Seems to me your confusing end of life with end of useful life. At no point did I say my Wii U wasn't useful or that I didn't love it.

I'm just being pragmatic, Wii U is end of life and all but abandoned by Nintendo, at this point BOTW is coming only because it was the starting platform and most of the development work was done on the platform. I'd wager on the Wii U version being all but finished and the sole reason its not out is because they're porting it and want a simultaneous release.

I don't see how saying its a dead platform is in any way being annoyed. If anything its great for us as it means Nintendo are far less likely to try and shut down the homebrew scene.

TBH the only person whose shown annoyance in this thread is you and its for the reason you accused me of being annoyed, you disagree with me and are throwing your toys out of the pram that I dare suggest Wii U is dead.
