So I got a really good deal off Craigslist a few hours ago. I got a New Nintendo 3DS XL for only $60 USD, but the thing is that the top is screen is messed up (as you can see in the video and picture) I was just wondering if you Tempers think both the screen above the LCD is broken as well with the LCD, or is it just the LCD? (I was guessing just the LCD, but the screen above seems "kinda" cracked too on the top right side)

I used to do screen replacements on O3DS/XL's back then, but I'm "outta the game" now. Plus, the New 3DS XL looks entirely different on the inside compared to the O3DS XL when I opened the back case off, but I did identify some of the components :P.

Money is no issue, I don't mind paying for a new LCD or the above screen since they seem to be cheap on ebay, but I just need some guidance from someone who has personally replaced screens on the New 3DS XL models before or know what they're talking about.

I've already done all the research I can, but couldn't find much of what I wanted to "look" for. There weren't any in-depth guides on how to replace the top screen, just speed ups of the person fixing it (which can cause many complications) I did find this tho, that was kinda nice to read
All help is appreciated, good day to all that read! :grog:

Because why not?:
11.1.0-34U OFW
SanDisk MicroSdcard 32 GB
Oot3DHax

Plan to downgrade it with Dsiwarehax (or when slowhax comes out :P) after fixing the screen

You're gonna have to open up the top half of the 3ds and the bottom half to disconnect the screen from the motherboard.

Are you asking if the clear piece of plastic that covers the screen is broken? Clearly, the actual screen is broken.

Hi,

What do you want to know about top LCD replacement on N3DS XL ?

Not too much, maybe what I should be careful of and look out for and how to sperate the bottom half from the hinge after taking out the motherboard.

Yea, I knew that already, I was just talking about the plastic that covers the the LCD. It dosen't seem broken in person, but there's a small part of the screen all the way to the right in the middle with a line of blue pixels (I'm assuming it was from the plastic being pushed into it?)

To separate the plastic glass from the LCD, you must use a scalpel or a fine blade and insert it below the adhesive (important !).
So from upper side of the blade you must have adhesive + plastic glass and from lower side metal LCD frame.
Very slowly and without cutting the adhesive you must advance the blade sideways so as to divide the two parts.

Yeah, that screen is f...
Don't really understand what you said: "both the screen above the LCD is broken as well with the LCD, or is it just the LCD'"
The Top LCD is only one piece, unlike the bottom one that has a screen and a digitizer (touch screen).
All you need is a Top screen replacement for the N3DS XL (2015) as you already found on ebay.

To replace it, check this guide instead of the blog you saw, to see how to fully replace the top LCD. (It's a pain to remove the ribbons from the hinge, I can tell you):
https://pt.ifixit.com/Teardown/Nintendo+3DS+XL+2015+Teardown/36346

Good luck with the Project/repair.

You don't need half of that crap the guide is trying to sell you either, if you play guitar at all you'll have plectrums laying around (I did :D) just use those when prying the top screen apart, you only really need those and the screwdriver ;)

A small update:

I decided to Dsiwarehax downgrade it and install A9LH+Luma3DS yesterday. The thing is a pirate beast now :3 especially with the new clock for older games (which is nice)

I ordered a screen off eBay and it'll come on the 5th of November (which is the same day as my birthday! weird?!?!? lol) and I'm excited to finally get this guy up and running in full perfection. Maybe I'll make a video? Most likely not, but I'll be sure to do before and after pictures.

hope you got the right screen, I followed your link to ebay, and it shows all kinds of screens, mostly for old 3DS XL. Remember, just because it says New 3DS XL top screen that doesn't mean it's for New 3DS XL model. Most sellers would put New in the title for old 3DS XL (because it's a new screen, not for New model). The screens are different, but if you can't tell the apart from the pictures, top screens for New 3DS XL model will cost $45-$55, if you paid $15-$25 then it's for old 3DS XL and won't work with your system

If you don't have one, make sure to buy a #00 Phillips screwdriver (it's a really small bit), you probably don't have one unless you've gone out of your way to buy glasses repair/electronics repair screwdrivers before.

Yea, I got screwed in the butt. At least I know the seller is legit and ships out the screens all nicely wrapped (+5 Star Rating)
I'll have to buy the correct screen for my model soon since there's a small amount of them left.

Being the noob I was I bought this screen when I really needed this one. IN MY DEFENSE, the first posting did say "N3DS" in the title lol

Welp, lesson learned, at least my cousin has a broken top screen so I didn't completely waste my money (:

instead of buying the new screen, especially if you're unsure on how to replace it properly, just for a little bit more, I offer repair services on eBay for all Nintendo systems: https://goo.gl/WPiyjB (includes new screen and proper installation, won't be able to tell if the system has ever been opened), or you can send me PM here for even better price

I'd prefer not to ship my baby away ): But I'll consider it and keep you bookmarked for future references!

I am in the same boat and need to replace the top screen. Almost bought a cheap one and when I asked a seller if that cheap one would work, he did not answer the question so I noped out of that and bought a refurbished top screen. It comes in Monday and going to do the second half of the repair (the 3ds is already torn down) Tuesday after I vote.

There are also sellers that are putting the new 3ds xl model number in the title for those cheap screens and should also be avoided. In the end if people are not comfortable buying the part and can opt for a repair from someone, they probably should.

One thing that just occurred to me.... The sound on the 2600 sucked less back then the harsh sound we hear now is from infinitely better speakers we have now, back when the 2600 was new speakers produced a almost muffled sound, like CRTs made old graphics look slightly better.

I wonder if I could recommend that to some emulation devs that perhaps the sound could use some smoothing out to simulate those old TVs
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think a few of the early systems could benefit from that, at least up to the 8 bit generation, by the 16 bit generation I think TVs had gotten a lot better in almost every way
