Hey everyone,

1
. I'm about to softmod my PS2 Phat and was wondering do I just need 1 memory card with FMCB installed & another one without it installed dedicated to game saves if the FMCB one gets full?

2. Is FMCB + OPL the best softmod for playing games off the PS2 phats hard drive?

3. If I buy a FMCB memory card off ebay, can I update it and install programs on it without needing a swap disk ect?

Thanks everyone, just double checking before purchasing memory card :)

1. Best to have separate memory cards. In fact, if you can get a bunch of them for cheap if possible.

2.Yes it is.

3. Yes you can but i recommend you learn how to make a fmcb memory card yourself. Either by using the swap magic method or by the 007 agent under fire method.

Was going to use 007 as I have a copy, but sadly I can't find any tutorials for the phat PS2 to swap disk it or to trick the sensors?

You can use this tutorial.

Also Some people pull the disc tray out of the ps2 using a cut up card but imo it is easier to take the top off of the phat ps2 to swap disc. btw i have no idea what model of the phat ps2 that you have so if you do decide to open it up be careful as some models of phat ps2 systems have the power and eject ribbon cables for the buttons attached to the top of the lid.

You only need a network adapter and a hard drive and a way to connect it to PC.

So this supports everything FMCB does and has no draw backs (compatibility/speed etc)?

Ok thanks for the help. Also do you think zfree's method is better than FMCB?

If you plan to use only 1 ps2 then yes. Me personally i just end up making fmcb memory cards anyways since anything can happen and you might have to get another ps2 for example. Plus once you have made at least 1 fmcb memory card you can easily make copies of it to other memory cards.

Either way it doesn't hurt to have more than 1 option of choice.

anyway, can i do all this without connecting the hd to my computer?
i don't want to have to get a ide adaptor, and would prefer to use use ethernet/tools via usb if possible.
(i have fcmb)
thanks :)

actually making the card wasn't so hard at all!
i just saw some template/image online, took an old library card, cut roughly, tested, cut a little more and it worked :D

By itself, I think the only drawback for FHDB is some .ELFs for emulators do not use the hard drive to boot and/or save. I keep a USB plugged in for Game Boy and Genesis. InfoGB will boot on the hard drive, but will not save to it, and I can't figure out the configuration for Picodrive. GPSP/Tempgba is finally able to boot from the hard drive. Other than that, it's basically the same thing. You can swap hard drives for fat PS2s, slims if you hardmod them.

You can use a memory card with FMCB to install FHDB on the hard drive.

so i can format, add isos, do everything, without connecting the hd to my computer?
(at the moment, ps2 linux is installed, which is cool and all, but games are more fun)

Awesome, I'll go with FHDB but have parts for FMCB around just in case I need it.

Without connecting HD to PC, you can use HD Loader 0.8c to install game discs to the HD. Or you can use a USB with a program, I think USButil, to install to USB, but the USB ports are only 1.1, so FMV will stutter and compatibility is not as good.

@zfreeman : Picodrive is just not able to save on the HDD, don't waste your time. ;)

More up-to-date tools for internal HDD (lets HDLoader RIP) :

- HDL Dump reworked version by AKuHAK - network install : http://psx-scene.com/forums/f19/new...mpt-gain-full-access-hdd-over-network-113411/

- HDLGameInstaller by SP193 - network + CD/DVD install (DVD9 games supported only over network) : http://psx-scene.com/forums/f19/hdlgameinstaller-v0-809a-115321/
ok so if hdloader is old, one of those 2 tools you linked to, they can format my hd and make it ready to install games?
